WATERLOO, NY--A former Boy Scout leader from Cayuga County has pleaded guilty to felony sex act charges he was facing.
Charles Seamans, of Weedsport, was facing charges in Seneca County for sexually abusing a 12 year old boy at Camp Babcock Hovey in Ovid last July.
Seamans was sentenced to 10 years in State Prison and will also have 5 years of post release supervision. He'll be required to register as a sex offender.
Seamans also plead guilty to similar charges in Cayuga County earlier this year.

Not only is Camp Babcock in Ovid; but Seamans lives in Brutus!
Charles H. Seamans was a Boy Scout leader for nine years, and had served as assistant scoutmaster in Cayuga County -- before he was arrested in January and eventually admitted to sexually abusing 10- and 12-year-old boys.
The youths were Boy Scouts.
The abuse occurred over an 18-month period at Seamans' home in Brutus. He abused one boy during a weeklong outing at a Scout camp in Ovid. This week, a plea deal allowed Seamans to be sentenced to five-year concurrent terms for two felony counts and one-year terms for two misdemeanor counts of sexual abuse.

I thought the Scouts have accountability procedures.
We do have accountability procedures which is in the Gude to Safe Scouting, and the twelve points of the scoutlaw. Now here in South Carolina, we send leaders applications for criminal background checks, before we let them in. Every once in a while one slips, sepite all the legal checks.

We have excellent accountability procedures, but no procedure is foolproof, and the worst part is that the kind of person who would have sex with a young boy is deep in perversion and therefore highly motivated, so they’ll do whatever it takes to get around it. It’s not like when you post a “Security by Brinks” sign on your lawn and it scares all the burglars off because they can go somewhere else...these people are driven by terrible forces. Heck, our accountability is so tight that I’ve hesitated in the past to have my younger son’s scouting friends over to the house while I was the only adult around. We’re that careful.
Scouting has one of, if not the, best records on this issue of any major youth organization...and since the BSA is (IIRC) the largest youth org in the world, the surprise would be if these incidents never happened.

Sex with a 12 year old isn’t pedophilia so don’t let the media use that term in cases like this. They love to hide behind this term and then they can claim that more straights are involved. Once puberty is reached by the victim it’s no longer pedophilia.

Don’t let them get away from that crap. If a male wants to do sexual things with another male, of any age, then he is suffering from same-sex attraction disorder.
He may have a mild case or a severe case, but one thing such a male is *not* is straight.

We need to pray for those Scouts, and the NY districts need to re-examine their safety procedures.
Nail his hide to the wall, and everyone review their security procedures, *again*. It’s so easy to get slack when nothing bad has happened lately.

Now for the courts to see that he is put in prison in the general population for a long-long-long time and that the general population know what he’s in for.
Won’t be a long time if he’s known to be a child molester. Although I disapprove, in general, of extra-judicial punishment, sometimes what needs to be done is getting people off the planet so they can’t do any more harm.
