Obama Pitches Immigration Policy

Barack Obama spoke on Wednesday night about a subject that often gets short shrift on the 2008 campaign trail: immigration. The Democratic candidate made the speech to a crowd of Hispanic leaders at black-tie dinner capping the end of a Congressional Hispanic Caucus Institute gathering in Washington.

After spending a few minutes talking about his opponent and his other policy proposals, Obama got his loudest cheers with these lines: “This election is about the 12 million people living in the shadows, the communities taking immigration enforcement into their own hand. They are counting on us to stop the hateful rhetoric filling our airwaves, and rise above the fear, and rise above the demagoguery, and finally enact comprehensive immigration reform.”

Obama complimented John McCain for championing the comprehensive immigration package that died in the Senate last year — and that helped (temporarily) sink his primary campaign. The bill, which would have created a path to citizenship for undocumented immigrants, inflamed widespread anti-immigration sentiment. Congress was deluged with calls, emails and faxes expressing opposition.

Since then, most politicians have kept the issue out of the spotlight. McCain has even made a pledge to tackle border security before any other changes — a reversal Obama made sure to point out Wednesday.

“Well, I don’t know about you, but I think it’s time for a president who won’t walk away from comprehensive immigration reform when it becomes politically unpopular,” he said.

Obama makes frequent mention of his healthcare and energy proposals on the stump, and his aides have said those will be the top priorities in the first year of his administration. A deal on immigration could still be elusive even with bigger Democratic majorities in Congress, given the success of Republican opponents who stopped two previous attempts to get the bill

When Obama speaks on immigration, what does REFORM mean when he always refers to it as “IMMIGRATION REFORM?”

“Reform” immigration. Give people even more motivation to hop that fence. Sure. My grandma once considered hopping a fence to get into America, but the water around Ellis Island looked too cold and deep.

“immigration reform” is code-word for “break open the borders, you racist Americans.”

he already said he wanted open borders and wanted to legalize all illegal aliens.

there is no where to go past that one. So I don’t want to hear any more.

He is unfit to lead. PERIOD.

Genius Obama, sheer genius. At a time when you should be working overtime to shore up your support among Reagan democrats - you’re doing this instead.

when it becomes politically unpopular

'cause, you know, being elected by the people, for the people, well... Their opinions don't count.

the communities taking immigration enforcement into their own hand

Never thought I'd agree with the Obambi, but I do agree with this: Shut down sanctuary cities! Deny them federal funds! Don't let SF dump its illegal alien criminals in the inland cities in Southern California! Yay! Shut them down!!

If McCain can paint Obama as Mr. Amnesty, and convice the conservative base (the most skeptical) that he is really for "enforcement first" then this could be a 40+ state landslide.

Cheers!

Its just too bad McCain is also the LaRaza/Open Borders candidate. On the issue of immigration, I'd vote NOTA!

The WSJ probably cannot wait to endorse Obama if McCain veers any further from a comprehensive solution.

Well, he can’t. He wanted amnesty and citizenship. Now he needs a running mate with indoor plumbing and a gun to make us forget that. I almost did. Nice try.

Obama’s plan to Bankrupt the country ... Then for the good of national defense all the states will need to merge under federal control forming the United Socialist States Of America. Many will succumb to the call for lifting term limits as Obama claims only he can stop the evil that will divide this country from. Obama is the most divisive politician in American History.

With Obama temporarily on the ropes, McCain could turn this election into a rout and a landslide with two statements:

1. “I was wrong on immigration. I will secure the borders, prohibit amnesty, and work for a compassionate return of all illegals to their countries of origin”.

2. “With the advice and knowledge of my Vice Presidential running mate, I will drill in ANWR and in all promising offshore fields and exploit the shale and tar sands deposits in America.”

That would wrap it up. But he won’t. McCain never misses an opportunity to miss an opportunity.

Code for amnesty. On the issue of border security, BOTH candidates are out of touch with the American people.

Shadows, my butt. Not in L.A. they aren’t. In fact, we citizens are pushed back into the shadows, unable to use our health services and schools we pay for, and deluged with the diseases and poor hygiene that these people bring to our city. And they march carrying their flags, demanding THEIR rights. And this man who wants to be President is saying they have rights here.

I will still vote for the ticket. We can't afford Obama. All I'm saying is I still oppose amnesty and I serve notice on John McCain I will oppose him if he tries to ram it down the throats of the American people.
