At last count, 26 bishops from the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops have made public statements concerning the recent theological statements by Vice Presidential Candidate Joseph Biden and House Speaker Nancy Pelosi.

In her responses to corrections from the bishops, Speaker Pelosi has, thus far, maintained her resolve and conviction on the matter as being consistent with her Catholic Faith. Her own bishop has now called for a meeting to discuss the matter.

Just yesterday, Cardinal Justin F. Rigali, chairman of the U.S. Bishops’ Committee on Pro-Life Activities, and Bishop William E. Lori, chairman, U.S. Bishops Committee on Doctrine, issued the following statement regarding the growing confusion resulting from the actions of the two legislators:

Primarily driven by statements both made on 'Meet the Press,' the bishops have concluded that enough is enough. Once content to simply legislate, the pro-choice democrats have recently decided to theologize in a public forum. This has ultimately called the question:

Blah, blah, blah. These CINOs have been in office 30+ years and if they dropped dead tonight, the RC would give them a full Catholic send-off to wherever they are heading.

Pelosi and Biden are engaged in a public campaign to distort the Church’s teachings on life and to endanger the most vulnerable and innocent human beings with mass murder.
They should be ex-communicated immediately and informed they will be denied Catholic burial.

"While in past centuries biological knowledge was often inaccurate, modern science leaves no excuse for anyone to deny the humanity of the unborn child. Protection of innocent human life is not an imposition of personal religious conviction but a demand of justice."

I am anxiously awaiting the responses by Pelosi and Biden on this matter. I am curious about how people with disordered minds will rationalize and justify their warped and twisted view. Perhaps they will correct the thinking of the 26 bishops, or, they will accuse the bishops of breaking the law that separates church and state. We are waiting with baited breath...

Adult supervision for the Democratic Party has arrived in the form of reason and in the form of McCain/Palin.

Pelosi and Biden are trying to bend this in two ways:

(1) By pretending that the existence of life is a theological speculation, and not the biological reality which it is.

(2) By pretending that the Church's doctrine on the sanctity of life is not theologically definite.

But it is a biological fact that life begins at conception and the sanctity of human life is firmly theologically defined and not a matter of debate.

Isn't it interesting that nobody has suggested that Pelosi and Biden have violated the "separation of church and state" by lying about Catholic teachings?

It is very fortuitous that Pelosi opened this can of worms completely and recently.

It will be very hard for them, Pelosi and Biden, now to ignore following it through.

This statement by the Bishops succinctly sums up the essentials. It is excellent.

  4. Cardinal Justin Regali of Philadelphia, chairman of the Committee on Pro-Life Activities, issued this statement through the USCCB website...
  5. ... Bishop William Lori of Bridgeport, chairman of the Committee on Doctrine, joined him
  6. Cardinal Edward Egan of New York publised a strongly worded statement of his own

  25. Archbishop George Niederauer of San Francisco has invited Pelosi to a "conversation"

{Last updated on September 9th.}

Note: #23 has been removed. Bishop Joseph Gossman of Raleigh, NC is actually the bishop emeritus, and the new bishop, Michael Burbidge has not, to my knowledge, made a personal statement.

And another one:

  1. Bishop Nicholas DiMarzio of Brooklyn: "Judging the Candidates"

{Last updated on September 10th.}

Notes:

  • Previous #23 has been removed. Bishop Joseph Gossman of Raleigh, NC is actually the bishop emeritus, and the new bishop, Michael Burbidge has not, to my knowledge, made a personal statement.
  • Previous #16 has also been removed, it was an erroneous duplication of current #13.
  • #26 was added September 10th, although he published his column September 6th

“They should be ex-communicated immediately and informed they will be denied Catholic burial.”

Yep. Once all the formal warnings and corrections and final warnings are done. Of course, Pelosi and Biden have had these positions for many years so that should be well past.

As bad as they are for the Government and the Nation at large they are Cancer in the Church and on the Culture. For their bishop's to let this “fade away” like it's been done so many times before would be the worst case scenario.

Think ... why did Ananias and Sapphira fall dead; why did the Holy SPirit strike them down? ... For the others who needed to get the message.

well then why don’t ya’ll excommunicate him

a strident abortionist would never be welcome in a serious southern charismatic congregation lest he/she were there to confess their sins

if Catholic was as hard on folks as they were once maybe thes pro-death Catholic politicians would flinch

it’s worth a try anyhow.

The Church is in a renewal badly needed since the late sixties and seventies. Once seen as compelling adherents to obey, the hierarchy then swung to the opposite extreme by nearly allowing an anything goes attitude.

Combine this with the blows she has suffered because of the abuse scandals and we get the timid leadership we have had over the past couple of decades.

But, faithful Catholics have been praying constantly and we are seeing her right herself. This is no different than when Martin Luther rightly accused the hierarchy of abuses over 500 years ago. The Church is perfect as, Jesus, her head is perfect. We who are the body are the imperfect ones and though Jesus leads us through the Holy Spirit, we must be ever vigilant against our sinful natures.

There is a saying, “It is an ill wind that blows no good.”
That the bishops are using this situation to reaffirm Catholic teaching about the sanctity of life is a good thing. That they may not be as forceful as we might like regarding excommunication or denial of communion to the likes of Pelosi and Biden et al, should not be our real concern.

Ultimately we are all going to stand before the Lord in judgment. The Church is responsible for teaching the truth. We are individually responsible for how we choose to follow and practice that truth.
