The Need for a Strong Immigration Stand in the Republican Platform
humanevents.com ^ | 09/02/2008 | Kris W. Kobach

It’s a strange election year when one of the most important issues for voters is avoided by both presidential candidates. But that is exactly what has happened in 2008 with illegal immigration. Recently, some people have suggested that the Republican Party Platform should be similarly silent, or at least equivocal, on the issue. They are dead wrong.

Think back to February 2008. Most of the contenders for the Republican presidential nomination were wrestling with one another to wear the mantle of “toughest on illegal immigration.” As Congressman Tom Tancredo correctly observed, the rest of the field “was trying to out-Tancredo Tancredo.”

Or think back to June 2007. The presidential campaign of Sen. John McCain was on the rocks. And there was a single, overriding reason for it: his role in pushing the McCain-Kennedy amnesty bill of that year. McCain has repeatedly acknowledged that fact, and declares that he has “learned his lesson.”

Throughout most of 2007 and the first quarter of 2008, illegal immigration ranked as the top domestic issue in the minds of voters. It still remains near the top of the list, although the high price of gasoline has taken over as the leading domestic issue.

Republicans in Congress have made clear where the Republican Party stands. In the Senate, Republicans voted 38-7 to reject the McCain-Kennedy Amnesty of 2007 (whereas Senate Democrats favored the amnesty 37-11). In the House, opposition to amnesty is even sharper, with Republicans opposing such provisions by a ratio of 20-1.

Just take a tough stand on employers of illegals. Call them cheats, thieves and slave merchants - because that's what they are. No jobs, few illegals. Bush dropped the ball totally (putting it kindly) on enforcing the law on employers. By going after employers it takes the anti Mexican-whatever slant away.

No jobs and the incentives to come here illegally go away significantly.

BTW, I'm an employer.

It’s a strange election year when one of the most important issues for voters is avoided by both presidential candidates.

We can assume only that it is part of a filthy plot to continue filling this once great nation with the riff-raff scum of that cluster of third world nations that languish south of our border.

We're all fed up to the eyebrows with this deliberate ignoring of an issue normal Americans concider of paramount importance.

They pay no attention to our letters, faxes and emails because they are either 535 idiots, or it doesn't fit in with their plan to pound this nation into the ground!

Congress and our huge, bloated federal government can go to hell!

They screwed us so cleverly this year. One could see it coming, slowly but surely. First the coopting the positions of the true patriots on this issue and knocking them out of the race, then becoming silent on it and everything back to normal. UNACCEPTABLE!!

I knew EXACTLY this is what they would do. I know the Republican Party too well on this issue. They could not give two hoots for what the grassroots, in fact most of America wants. So its all hush hush, just as Juan y Juan (McCain and Hernandez) want it.

It is time to smoke them out. See if Sarah Palin will carry our cause and make sure strong language is in there. This could endear her more to the troops and prove her conservative mettle to all of us.

If there isnt a tough stand on illegal alienism on the GOP platform, then McCain will surely lose.

Its an issue that is a winner for the GOP, if they take a tough stand.

All the polling shows that Hispanics are going to support Obama, so it is silly to appease a smaller group at the expense of the majority of American voters...and a smaller group that will not vote for you, anyway

Failure to act on illegal alienism is weakness on national security

I wish they would do something but nobody will touch the issue. Hispanics are already a huge voting block and are going to surpass white votes in 2 generations. A huge portion of the legal immigrants support their illegal comrades.

The only way we’ll ever get traction on the issue is if the Democrats man up and demand something be done about illegal immigation as well to give Republicans cover. But that is not going to happen.

We just have to wait idly by as huge swaths of America turn into Mexico.

“Just take a tough stand on employers of illegals”

Agreed. Its the only way to stomp out the problem. We don’t have the resources to catch and deport all of ‘em. Target employers with a vengeance and jobs for illegals will dry up. No jobs=millions self deporting.

It will happen. Just go into any kindergarten near me if you want to see the future. Birth right citizenship will be the undoing of this country.

I realize you're new ‘round here so I'll be as polite as I can...your comment “A huge portion of the legal immigrants support their illegal comrades?” is inaccurate to say the least.

I don't know where you get your information BUT as a Native Californian whose home borders Santa Ana, CA, a city inundated with illegal aliens and one who has many friends & neighbors who are Americans of Mexican ancestry, I have to disagree with you. The Americans of Mexican ancestry here are vehemently against allowing illegals from any country to stay here. The illegals not only take away jobs from Americans of Mexican ancestry but they also drive down the wages, lower the living standards with crime, gangs, illegal drugs, overcrowding schools with children who do not speak English and housing problems. And I won't even get into the 300K foreigners who are presently incarceratated in American prisons & jails across America at a cost to American taxpayers of at least SIX AND A HALF BILLION DOLLARS A YEAR!

As far as waiting for the 'Rats, the 'Rats WANT illegals here, they want their votes...exactly why 'Rats want illegals to be able to obtain driver's licenses....we ALL know that foreigners don't need a driver's license from America to drive here...all legal driver's licenses from other countries are honored here... the only reason 'Rats want illegals to be able to obtain a driver's license in America is so they can go to the next window and REGISTER TO VOTE! Illegal aliens are the NEW dependent minority of the "Mommy" party.

OK I figured out how to turn the hand off...

That’s handy...

LOL

Yes, well...

RESTORING AMERICAN SOVEREIGNTY AND LEADERSHIP Page 23

S.A.V.E. U.S.A. – We support seven key steps to secure America.
S – Secure America’s border; Northern, Southern, and ports.
A – Abolish Adjustment of Status in the United States.
V – Vigorously enforce immigration laws using federal, state, and local law enforcement agencies.
E – Eliminate government benefits to illegal aliens.
U – Unimpeded deportation process.
S – Stop employment of illegal aliens.
A – Amend legal immigration rates to more sustainable levels.

Border Security – “Order on the borders” is basic to solving complex issues of illegal immigration. All means must be deployed immediately to prevent illegal aliens, organized crime and potential terrorists from crossing the border. Secure American borders by any means necessary

Legal Immigration – One nation, one flag, one language, one loyalty

America is a country of immigrants, we should insist that any immigrant who comes here in good faith becomes an American and assimilates himself/herself to the United States. He/she shall be treated on an exact equality with everyone else. This is predicated upon the fact that the
person is in every facet an American, and nothing but an American. There can be no divided allegiance. Anyone who says he is an American, but something else also, isn’t American at all. We have room but for one flag, the American Flag. We have room for but one language here and that is the English language. We have room for but one sole loyalty and that is loyalty to the American people. (Teddy Roosevelt, 1907)

Illegal Immigration – No amnesty! No how. No way.

Illegal aliens have committed a criminal act. We oppose illegal immigration, amnesty in any form, or legal status for illegal immigrants. We support an end to the “catch and release” policy; criminal penalties and aggressive enforcement for those who knowingly employ illegal workers; expeditious hearings on deporting non-violent illegal immigrants; suspending automatic U.S. citizenship to children born to illegal immigrants; elimination of
federal funding to cities with “sanctuary” laws; empowering state and local law enforcement agencies with authority and resources to detain illegal immigrants; rejection of non-verifiable foreign-issued cards as valid identification; strict prosecution of any entity involved in phony identification documents; elimination of day labor work centers; elimination of laws requiring hospitals to give non-emergency care to illegals; elimination of social security benefits or government funding to illegals for education, housing or business loans; preventing any foreign entity from using our judicial system to enter the United States; strong document verification prior to issuance of a Texas drivers license; withholding federal highway funds from any state issuing drivers licenses to illegal aliens; and aggressive prosecution of persons smuggling humans across our borders.

Enforcement of Immigration Law – We support strict and immediate enforcement of all immigration laws.

Birthright Citizenship – We call on the Legislative, Executive and Judicial branches of these United States to clarify Section 1 of the 14th amendment to limit citizenship by birth to those born to a citizen of the United States: with no exceptions.

Security and Prosperity Partnership (SPP) and the North American Union– We strongly oppose and call on Federal and State officials to place high priority on the withdrawal of the United States from the Security and Prosperity Partnership and the formation of the North American Union.

Trans-Texas Corridor – We emphatically oppose the Trans-Texas Corridor in any form or manner. We call for full investigation of any public officials authorizing any form of eminent domain for the Trans-Texas Corridor and foreign funding.
