Is it really a hurricane, or even just a "tropical depression," unless a TV reporter in a hooded windbreaker is flopping around in the wind and rain like a landed flounder?
Is it really a weather story at all unless the TV people can go outside in the storm and, while risking bodily injury, warn viewers that they shouldn't go outside in the storm and risk bodily injury?
If so, Hurricane Gustav was a real storm: All of the cliches and hyper-theatrical tropes of TV hurricane coverage were at Category 5 yesterday.

LMAO, Now thats funny!
“Yes Bob, I can hear you. As you see folks
I am waist deep in molten lava, the eruption
continues. The mayor and Governor continue to
call for calm from their command post in Kansas...”
—if you bother to watch it , watch the hairdo’s-—years ago I quit after seeing some perfectly-coifed CNN blabbermouth tell about the fierce winds—as not a hair on his head was moving—
And then there’s the “cry-wolf” element to this .... will 2M evacuate for the next ‘caine based on the predictions? We’ll have to see.
I can't even bear to watch this drivel anymore...sad, because the technology we have to monitor and view these phenomena is impressive. But, I pass nowadays because of the silly Oprah style reporting and just read the news.
I couldn't agree more!! I don't know who dreamed this absurb behavior for "weather guessers" up, but it is long past time for it to end. I watched one guy get creamed live by a tree branch during a hurricane in FL in 2004.
Venturing out live into a hurricane to show how strong the winds are and how dangerous it is is the epitome of stupidity and it is long past time for the practice to end!!
This is the dying print-media dinosaur lashing its tail ineffectually and snarling and gnashing its teeth at the force that is killing it: electronic immediacy.
Enjoy this, gentlemen -- on all levels.
Die, die, die Drive-By Democrats, all die......
Dan Rather, in 1961, when (as a reporter for KHOU-TV, the KGB CBS affiliate in Galveston and Houston) he clung to a Galveston street sign in 130-mph winds during Hurricane "Carla" and delivered a report live.
naaa he just peed at the prospect of dealing with Gov Palin
So, The Village People are auditioning down there?
Geraldo was the most ridiculous. He was running a segment on the levees, and spotted a guy in the water with a life vest on. Geraldo became excited about the guy drowning. Suddenly, the guy was being pulled by a lifeline to a nearby barge.
It turns out there was a propane tank floating in the water and they were trying to secure it. Sure, it was hazardous, but the guy was secure in his lifeline. But Geraldo continued to talk as though he just witnessed a miraculous saving of life. Even after the event, Fox news would use this avenue when presenting the video. Ridiculous!
Geraldo is still the champ of this stuff.
Last night on CNNI, actually one of the reporters in LA said CRYING WOLF over the Cat 5 coverage.
Another report was having to shake coat sleve to make it appear windy.
LOL
Geraldo was reliving another "Al Capone" moment in his mind. You could practically hear him thinking "Not again!!!"
The disappointment of the MSM that NOLA is still there this morning is palpable.
"@*#$^ IT!!!"
I had had thought of that afterward. I told the wife while watching it, it didn't look like a rescue to me. The guy starts swimming toward the barge, then the lifeline appears. It was pretty obvious.
Naturally, Geraldo didn't know that going into the segment, but it became obvious (if I could see it from my living room he could...). Yet he couldn't stop talking about a rescue. Once he commits himself (pun intended), he just can't back off even though it would be the smart thing to do.
The key point is, “Stay tuned to Eyeball-Can-I-Get-A-Witness News for all of the up-to-the-minute updates on this breaking story!”
