Older Republican candidate picks relatively inexperienced young woman to be his vice president?
Check.
The Republican dies of a stroke and his VP becomes the leader of the free world?
Hmm ...
ABC's "Commander in Chief," starring Geena Davis, played out this scenario in 2005.
With 72-year-old Republican nominee John McCain shocking Beltway insiders by tapping 44-year-old Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin as his veep pick, suddenly a portion of the "Chief" premise seems downright precognitive.
"It's unbelievable isn't it?" said "Chief" creator Rod Lurie. "I think that Geena and I need to be paid royalties by the Republicans."
Lurie was reached by phone as he was leaving the Democratic National Convention, en route to Toronto, where he will screen his new film "Nothing but the Truth."
A Barack Obama supporter, Lurie criticized the real-life manifestation of his TV fiction.
"People who understand politics know anything is possible," he said. "Picking a woman is an absolute strategic idea from McCain's point of view. He's not talking about governing right now. The idea of this woman actually facing down [Vladimir] Putin and negotiating with [Dmitry] Medvedev is idiotic."
In the "Chief" pilot, the qualifications of Davis' character also came under fire before she later proved her worth.
"We don't need the world to see a soft, indecisive woman commanding the troops," one character declared.
I must admit I have have the notion too, but then asked myself if I would feel the same with a man in same position? Yes, but only a Dem man... They are scared to death of a “Lil Lady” From Alaska. I HOPE she’s what I think she is.
I loved season 4, and 5. Hated 6.I’m hoping for a rebound this season. Hopefully the movie out in November is good.
My thought exactly. Guess writing and/or producing doesn’t pay much.

See post #24.
More words of wisdom from the “lets pretend” crowd.
I do not know how well Governor Palin will fair in debates or interviews, but I do know that I have certainly seen and heard enough from that blow hard Joe Biden.
Senator "Motormouth" is not just a jerk, he is a very dull jerk with an ego bigger than the State that he supposedly represents.
“The idea of this woman actually facing down [Vladimir] Putin and negotiating with [Dmitry] Medvedev is idiotic.”
Hello? Anybody home?
Sarah Palin HAS dealt directly with Putin and Medvedev, on issues stemming from territorial fishing grounds in the Bering Strait, and by all accounts, earned their respect.
This is a woman who gets up at 3 AM to go out and hunt moose, field dresses it for transport back in, and cuts it up for moose stew.
They don’t call her “Sarah Barracuda” for nothing, you know.
A soft indecisive woman like Margaret Thatcher? If you are throwing darts at the phone book, then chances are that a woman would be a less fortunate pick than a man. However, no matter what the shape of the curve or how steep, there are some at the top of it. Thatcher was at the top of the curve. Irt looks like Palin is there also.
The idea of Palin dealing with Putin is rather more comforting than Hussein dealing with Putin, or Biden.

which just means she won't be home to answer the phone and it'll go to voice mail.
(sorry; couldn't resist)
hmm....
Like Jimmy Carter stared down Khomenei or Brezhnev? Like Clinton stared down the warlords of Somalia? I am sure Freepers can recall some other great dim stare downs.
"Relative", interesting word. If that relativity is a comparison to Obama, she is highly qualified.
But tell me. Who must we compare Obama to in order to find that he is relatively qualified?
What a crass jerk: McCain’s not goint to die in office. U know nothing!
I hope he talks to every media outlet...that should be worth another million votes for McCain-Palin.
How long was that stupid show on tv?
I can easily see Sarah staring down Putin. She is strong willed and will do fine. Biden is the one I worry about more, not to mention Obama.
I remember that Commander in Chief show. As I recall the president served 2 terms in the House and was a college president. Sounds like the governor has more experience than this fictional president.
