Textbook Lies About Islam
New York Post ^ | August 17, 2008 | Gilbert T. Sewall

Islam is one of the most important issues of our time, but you wouldn't know it from reading a high school textbook. What students learn makes it almost impossible to understand Islam in history or the world today, much less what fuels Islam's challenge to peace and international security.

A review of leading textbooks used in New York City and nationwide reveals they deliberately misrepresent Islamic history, jihad, Islamic law (sharia), global terrorism, and more.

Thinking that jihad is "holy war" is wrong, students are told. Instead textbooks insist it is merely an effort to improve oneself and society.

"Muslims should fulfill jihad with the heart, tongue, and hand. Muslims use the heart in their struggle to resist evil. The tongue may convince others to take up worthy causes, such as funding medical research. Hands may perform good works and correct wrongs," chimes one popular California textbook called "History Alive!"

A widely used Houghton Mifflin textbook titled "Across the Centuries" defines jihad as an "inner struggle" to "do one's best to resist temptation and overcome evil."

In spite of centuries of Islamic conquest and bloodshed, there's never any hint of aggression toward the "infidel." Illiberality and oppression are willfully ignored. "Traditionally, in Islamic countries women are not expected to read or write. Today, Muslim women are pursuing educations and new career opportunities. While Islamists call for a return to tradition, many Muslims embrace a mixture of traditional and modern ways," asserts Prentice Hall's "World History," a high school textbook popular in New York City and suburban schools.

The tinny phrase "career opportunities" aside, the word tradition or a variation of it is used over and over, yet students never get the slightest idea of what these "traditions" are or what "return to tradition" means.

Having survived a world history class in public high school 3 years ago, I will say that while the textbooks suck (especially when they get to modern things, but that’s a whole different topic), we had enough discussions to present Islam in both the lights of radicalism and “peace”.

Maybe my circumstance is unique (though I doubt it since my school was quite liberal). Maybe I just knew better being a conservative.

A widely used Houghton Mifflin textbook titled "Across the Centuries" defines jihad as an "inner struggle" to "do one's best to resist temptation and overcome evil."

One could take away two different things from this: 1) that all Muslims practice this type of jihad, or 2) that there are Muslims who obviously don't resist temptation and practice evil.
I won't presume what skulls of mush are taking away from this information, but if they pay any attention to events in many parts of the world, they should come to the later conclusion.

We are so PC and fixated on diversity that we'll self censor. It's even considered “intellectual/ethical” to do so.

"Muslims should fulfill jihad with the heart, tongue, and hand.

But that's true. It's just that the hand is holding a sword or the detonator to a homicide belt.

I’m homeschooling, and yes, I’m going to teach “intolerance” towards Islam.

According to the non-apostate Muslim, you have three choices:

Convert to Islam,
Submit to slavery,
Die.

A textbook that says “Muslims should fulfill jihad with the heart, tongue, and hand. Muslims use the heart in their struggle to resist evil.”? Imagine reading a textbook that interprets the Bible to school children? What place is it for a textbook to do this in a classroom?

A.Why should one fiber of textbook be dedicated to Islam when a Bible can’t be found in a class?

B. Muslims aren’t doing anything to help their cause.

C. World history, the real thing, teaches us that Islam is a cover for despots eager to control their masses by fear and lies, sanctioning murdering even their own in the name of Allah.

Oh, yeah, I want to learn more./sarc

The same people who roll their eyes when Bush refers to ‘Evil’ have nothing but admiration for Islamic refereces to same. If that isn’t an example of brain-dead anti-Americanism I don’t know what is.

I live in California and my son, 12 years old, attends public school. He is gifted in track and basketball so we keep him in the public school system so that he can compete. At home, we counter teach him in all the subjects that he “must” learn in school. He knows the truth and he also understands what the schools are trying to do. I am proud that we are raising a very smart conservative. I hope that, someday, maybe his children will be able to go to school to learn the truth.

Oh, I'm sure they distort the Bible just as much--the other way though.

Seriously, if you throw him in the shark infested waters, he has to know about the sharks* and be armed (with the truth).

Realize that the teachers have them for 6 hours a day - but if he doesn’t view them as benevolent authorities, that will help.

America and the rest of the civilized world are at war with Islam, yet our textbooks talk about how wonderful Islam is. This is madness. It would be like if during WWII US textbooks taught students how great Nazism is. We will never win with this attitude.

on page 8:

” It is also related from Ali that he said: ‘Faith has four pillars - Patience, Firm Belief, Equity and Jihad.’

And from him also it is related that he said: ‘Fight in the way of Allah with your hands, but if you cannot, fight with your tongues, and if you cannot, fight with your hearts.’ “
