WARSAW, Poland (AP) - Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice and her Polish counterpart signed a deal Wednesday to build a U.S. missile defense base in Poland, an agreement that prompted an infuriated Russia to warn of a possible attack against the former Soviet satellite.

I’m torn here. On the one hand, I see a need for this defense system and am happy the people of Poland are with us. On the other hand, we weren’t too happy about USSR placing missiles in Cuba.

Theirs were offensive; ours are defensive.

IOW theirs were aimed at us to destroy our territory and populace. The ones going into Poland are designed to destroy INCOMING offensive missiles.

IOW it makes it pretty obvious what Russia (with or without its ally Iran) was planning to do to Poland.

The Cuba missiles were nuclear warheads, these are non-nuclear defensive missiles. Big difference.

Why limit the missiles to defensive? Load them up with ICBMs, as long as we’ll be the ones controlling them.

I’m torn here.

Perhaps this will help ease your mind. Missles are not missles, different types, different purposes. The missiles that the Soviet Union placed in Cuba were offensive missles systems, designed to deliver nuclear weapons to a ground target. The only target from Cuba was the United States.

The missles that we will put in Poland are defensive missles. They are designed to shoot down incoming missles - big, big difference. Moreover, the missles that we intend to shoot down are not Russian missles, they are missles launched against Europe from rogue nations - that would be spelled I-R-A-N. We have offered to share the command and control system with the Russians and have invited them to be a part of the effort. They have refused. Why would you think that they would do that?

Bad comparison for two reasons.

1. The missiles in Cuba were offensive nuclear weapons. The missiles in Poland are non nuclear defensive weapons.

2. The USA is the force for good in the world. We do not seek to subjugate peoples and deny them their sovereignty. By putting the missiles in Poland any attack on them is an attack on our strategic interests thereby helping to insure Poland's freedom.

I still believe Clinton helped the Muslims steal Kosovo.

I still believe the taxpayers of the USA are not responsible for all the ills of this world.

‘Power corrupts and absolute power corrupts absolutely’ - This can even apply to the USA.

Staying out other peoples business is becoming harder and harder for the USA.

After having been educated on this, are you still torn? Or were you just making a hit and run comment to get your name out here in front of us?

Not torn any more. Many good points were made. Your ‘hit and run to get my name out there’ comment was unnecessary. My posting history does not suggest that is my style. I was simply observing the proximity of the missiles and remembering way back when. I appreciate the good points provided by all. I was afraid I would need my asbestos pajamas, but they weren’t required.

I apologize. I didn’t check your posting history, and didn’t recognize your nic. I was simply surprised after so many had made such good comments, that you didn’t honor any of the FReepers who engaged you with a response.
