Assorted TV commentators keep opining that the Olympics are all about the brotherhood of man, rather than national ambition or patriotism. But don't tell that to the fanatically nationalist Chinese -- or to Kobe Bryant, the NBA star who is playing with Team USA in Beijing.
In an interview Friday on NBC, the world's most famous basketball player told Chris Collinsworth how he got "goosebumps" when he received his Olympics uniform. "I actually just looked at it for a while. I just held it there and I laid it across my bed and I just stared at it for a few minutes; just because as a kid growing up this is the ultimate, ultimate in basketball." The Los Angeles Laker went on to call the U.S. "the greatest country in the world. It has given us so many great opportunities, and it's just a sense of pride that you have; that you say, 'You know what? Our country is the best.'"

I wish one of these liberals/democrats would explain to me what my family and I have to gain from this so-called “brotherhood of man”. I mean, besides a smaller paycheck, less freedom and the shame of slaving for a bloated but increasingly power-starved government.
Even liberals used to love their freedom. That is, until the resulting happiness and prosperity became just too much for them to bear.
The interviewer is such a liberal puke! “Is it cool...this day an age...a day gone by...” Arrrrrrrrgh!
BIG DITTO.
Thanks for posting this article gpapa.
Equal misery for all...
Not justice for all...
I'm not a basketball fan, not even sure which team Kobe plays for, but I got goose bumps listening to that interview. It's nice to hear someone young with the same pride as many from my generation have.
China is kicking our butts in gold medals right now. I hope the USA will be able to bounce back this week?
Doesn't matter to me....I see no joy in the faces of the Chinese champions, only perhaps a steely sense of relief that they will not be subject to a grilling as to why they failed. Our athletes are free to go and do their best and will return to a hero's welcome from those who love them--win or lose.
Well said! The fact that our athletes were chosen to go is a source of pride for us all. The Chinese can take it all AFAIC.
What a great quote from Kobe!
You're right, but at least the commentator AND Kobe Bryant seem to “get it.”
If kids these days need a role model, Kobe just might be an improvement on Dennis Rodman, for example.
Jim Lampley interviewed Kobe and Lebron yesterday and Lebron pretty much said he had a lot of pride in being an American and he didn’t want to let us down because they witnessed Michael Phelps and others winning gold medals.
All of our athletes seemed thrilled to be in the Olympics. It’s great to see the NBA guys speak out; we need more of that.
[You know what? Our country is the best.]
The ‘Main Stream Pravda’ had to be screaming on the inside when they heard that.
Barack and Michelle disagree with you, Kobe.
I believe the “Redeem Team” has redeemed itself in both attitude and actions on the court (I know its not over yet though)
