Thoughts On Rick Warren's Forum (McCain, the new Reagan)
http://marcambinder.theatlantic.com ^ | 16 Aug 2008 | Marc Ambinder

Who says John McCain fares poorly in these types of sessions? At Rick Warren's forum, he seemed more comfortable and his answers flowed a bit more naturally than Barack Obama's. Granted, the audience was probably more favorably inclined to him. Obama did fine. Penty of humility. And his answer on taxes was as crisp as I've heard.

.. ** McCain recounted the story of his secretly Christian gun guard who drew a cross with his foot. He teared up as he recalled it. It's a very effective way of talking about what his faith means to him without having to define his theology directly.

** McCain said he would support a federal marriage amendment to the constitution if and when a federal court overturned a state ban on gay marriage. I think that's new, but his campaign disputes this. (After the jump, the evidence that they sent to me.)

** Three Americans whose advise would be indispensable to McCain: Gen. Petraeus. Rep. John Lewis. And Meg Whitman. (trial balloon?) Obama said he's listen to Dick Lugar and Sam Nunn. Here's what Sen. John McCain said in 2004 about a federal marriage amendment:

If the Supreme Court of the United States rejects the Defense of Marriage Act as unconstitutional; if state legislatures are frustrated by the decisions of jurists in more states than one, and if state remedies to such judicial activism fail; and finally, if a large majority of Americans come to perceive that their communities' values are being ignored and other standards concerning marriage are being imposed on them against their will, and that elections and state legislatures can provide no remedy then, and only then, should we consider, quite appropriately, amending the Constitution.

I believe tonight John McCain won the election. He was unequivocal on conservative issues. Pro-Life, Pro-Marriage,Judges, no new Taxes(Best I've heard of any candidate), and Security.

John McCain even managed to bring up the horrible anti-American card-check. If I had any doubts about him they are gone after tonight. I'm 100% behind him. He is becoming more like Reagan. He is going to win this election in a landslid if he keeps sticking to his principles. He isn't running as a Senator. Senators don't win elections. John McCain is running as an unashamed conservative.

I walked a few miles today with my daughter working for McCain and Jim Gilmore and it was just great getting out there and seeing how many people are going to vote conservative. People let's put this hero in the white house and let's give him the Senate back so he can do some good. We need to fight Obama. If you didn't see why after tonight you should know.

Based simply on the answers in this forum, McCain was perfect....and out Reaganed Reagan IMO.

Now, whether you want to compare that to McCain’s past that is another question.

Reagan was Reagan even when he wasn’t running for office.

Ignore that poster , he is irrational and full of hate. That poster has made some off the wall crazy conspiracy crap about John McCain and his wife that should have resulted in him being yanked off this website months ago.

McCain cleaned Obama’s clock, no doubt. Obama is going to go back, try to spin this to his benefit and lick his wounds. Obama does not even belong on the same stage as this man and it was apparent.

Obama was probably high fiving his angry wife as he walked off the stage following his hour.

By the end of McCain’s hour, Obama was probably looking for someplace to hang his head in shame.

McCain was absolutely brilliant, and I don’t even like McCain that much (until tonight)

He did well but let’s not go crazy here. McCain is a loooong way from Reagan.

After the MSM gets done with it, Obama will, once again, be the undisputed victor.

The vast majority of potential voters will not have watched and will get their info from the MSM spin machine. ;-(

Ahh yes I remember you, you're noob who got your panties in a twist when I asked how McQueeg feels knowing that our buddies in China are supplying weapons to our enemies who are killing our soldiers. As for comments about his wife, they didn't come from me. You must be making that part up.

I’m not comparing McCain to Reagan overall. I am simply saying if you knew NOTHING about McCain, and dropped out of a time warp and watched ONLY this event, he hit all the Reagan points.

The only thing I can recall different would be global warming, but he only mentioned it in passing. He spoke strong on National Security even as it relates to oil.

I think Michelle O Belle is still in Hawaii.

McCain made Obama look like a school boy.

I see McCain along the same vein.

Tonight he removed all doubts I have about wanting him in my White House.

McCain did a heck of a lot better than I would have imagined.

My wife Doc said well McCain will have to do really well to look better than Obama.

Now Doc says that McCain kicked Obamas Butt in a Christian way.
