The Dennis Miller interview

By JEFFREY RESSNER | 8/10/08 12:29 PM EST

How would you describe your political beliefs: Republican? Independent? Libertarian?

Well, I’d say it’s eclectic pragmatism at some point. I’m a moderate in some degree because I have wildly swinging opinions but through some sort of ideological feng shui they end up in the middle. Some swing far to the left, others to the far right. I’m for the war, but I’m also for gay marriage. I don’t care if two folks with the same genitalia want to get hitched, I just don’t want some a—hole from another country coming over here and blowing up their wedding to make a political statement.

Good interview! LOL! Thanks for posting. Hooray Dennis Miller! I still recall his exchange with Phil Donahue on one of Phil’s last shows (or maybe his last). It was “must see” TV for me at that time.

I’ve been listening to Dennis Miller for years and time after time I keep agreeing with him. Western USA libertarian/conservative without being a nut about it, is how I describe it.

Neither do I so let's keep gay marriage illegal, just for safety's sake.

He doesn’t come off as a nut at all on the radio. He’s very gracious IMO.

Is he for recreational drugs? If so, that makes him full on Libertarian IMO.

The important question to anyone who cares about our republican, national/federal form of government is WHO should decide the question of gay marriage.

Hopefully we can agree as conservatives that the SCOTUS should not decide whether or not to allow gay marriage, as a national policy.

So what then? I believe it should be a state issue, and Dennis Miller should be free to live in a state that sanctions such marriages. Vote with your feet, as RR used to say.

There ought to be some form of protection for states who do not wish to honor such marriages, but there should NOT be a constitutional amendment banning gay marriage. It has absolutely nothing to do with Federal/National responsibilities. The only relevant question for the Feds is how to allow for some states pro-, some states con.

Ron Paul demonstrates why this isn't so. His libertarian foreign policy is too radical for many who happen to favor liberal drug laws, less federal involvement, etc. Therefore, if one rightly puts national defense as a higher priority than domestic drug laws, libertarianism isn't a responsible option.

He makes perfect sense to me. I don’t support gay marriage but I distrust anyone who makes the issue a priority either way. We have more important things to worry about, and like Miller I see most of them in terms of foreign threats.

I don't always agree with Dennis or his side kick, "Sal".

But I enjoy his radio show as a light respite from the normal hard nose radio talk shows.

I have to agree with 'voting with your feet'. I finally did.

What always bothered me when I was a Californian was that I'd wake up every day to a new left wing-orchestrated insult, but never bothered to move to a free state.

Those trapped behind enemy lines really ought to consider moving somewhere more in line with their belief system. The old adage about lighting a candle rather than cursing the darkness applies here.

Most likely, the founding fathers would have banned it had they thought something so pernicious would become popular. Slavery wasn’t allowed to exist on a state by state basis. Gay marriage, if allowed, will be as cancerous to our society as was slavery.

To me, watching the movie “Escape From New York” gives us a view of Libertarians utopia in action.

Mr. Miller is a great entertainer, he seems a real nice guy and he is sharp as people come IMO.
He’s brought a lot of pleasure to me and many in my family from SNL on.

He was a riot as the judge in a small part in the recent movie “What happens in Vegas”.
His few minutes on screen in that movie alone make the movie worth buying IMO.

I think the Republican party needs to allow for regional differences for example bringing together Western libertarians, southern conservatives, and SOME northeastern moderates like Rudy. On the FEDERAL level we all should organize around certain key issues i.e. strict constructionist judges, lower taxes & smaller government, strong national defense, vigorous federalism and wider protections for religious conscience in the public square (i.e. not forcing Catholic Charities to place babies in gay households). Core issues should be non-negotiable after that we should allow states the widest possible latitude on other issues. Leviathan needs to be stopped and our party needs to reclaim the mantle of opposing leviathan. What does everyone else think?

(Q.)In just the past few minutes you’ve referenced obscure figures ranging from a '60s-era general to a vintage talking doll. Given your audience on conservative talk radio, are you too hip for the room?

Blah, blah, blah, Jeffrey. Guess what? I live out in the sticks, have a pick up truck, and my share of guns, and I never went to college, and consider myself a conservative. Yet, I like Dennis Miller, and usually get his references perfectly well, and would listen to his radio show if we got it on a daily basis in my neck of the woods. I use to watch him on TV, and still catch him on O'Bloviater's Factor show.

Yeah, and I live in NJ! I was born here. I’ve travelled a lot, but I am here. I LOVE my job, I LOVE my business, I LOVE my house and my community. I’ve considered leaving, at least to Pennsylvania, but for now, I’m hanging on. But I don’t feel trapped here. I’m here because I still want to be here. You have to take the bad with the good. In my case, I’m just too happy to be miserable.

I just see it as horrendous 80s cheese. Dennis Miller's OK. I'm not a big fan. Too wordy. Annoying voice. Snarky is no way to go through life. It gets tiring. A little is OK, but he's pretty much a johnny-one-note.

Actually, that was dystopia, not utopia.

If one wanted to see libertarian UTOPIA in action, they might try "1776."

The boiler plate liberal insults in the comments section were nearly as funny as Dennis Miller (Whom I enjoy listening to whenever I can).

Hope this interview with Dennis Miller puts to rest the notion of him being a conservative of any kind. Supporting Bush in the WOT and in the battle for Iraq is fine. Other liberals like Jon Voight and Ron Silver have taken the same approach. They’re all patriots for that public stance.

On most issues, however, Miller remains a bleeding heart liberal of the first order. Miller filled in on Sean Hannity’s radio show several years back. He opened the show by telling the audience he would support even higher taxes to pay for an even bigger welfare state bureaucracy. And his support for homo rights, abortion on demand and gun control has nothing to do with conservatism.
