FCC Commissioner: Return of Fairness Doctrine Could Control Web Content
Business & Media Institute ^ | 8/12/2008 | Jeff Poor

Posted on 08/12/2008 5:05:18 PM PDT by Las Vegas Dave

There’s a huge concern among conservative talk radio hosts that reinstatement of the Fairness Doctrine would all-but destroy the industry due to equal time constraints. But speech limits might not stop at radio. They could even be extended to include the Internet and “government dictating content policy.”

FCC Commissioner Robert McDowell raised that as a possibility after talking with bloggers at the Heritage Foundation in Washington, D.C. McDowell spoke about a recent FCC vote to bar Comcast from engaging in certain Internet practices – expanding the federal agency’s oversight of Internet networks.

The commissioner, a 2006 President Bush appointee, told the Business & Media Institute the Fairness Doctrine could be intertwined with the net neutrality battle. The result might end with the government regulating content on the Web, he warned. McDowell, who was against reprimanding Comcast, said the net neutrality effort could win the support of “a few isolated conservatives” who may not fully realize the long-term effects of government regulation.

“I think the fear is that somehow large corporations will censor their content, their points of view, right,” McDowell said. “I think the bigger concern for them should be if you have government dictating content policy, which by the way would have a big First Amendment problem.”

Yep, I’m thinking, what about sites like this one? We all contribute our opinions, and we’re not trying to give equal time to opposing points of view.

I am completely blown away by this. This is in complete contraindication with the Bill Of Rights.

Does this apply to all forms of Free Speech?

Or only those where Conservatives are successful?

I am sure that if Obama is elected with a Democratic House and Senate, and a Democrat majority on the Supreme Court, it will mean the fairness doctrine applied to all media: tv and radio, newspapers, books, pamphlets, the internet and even public speech. And to the Democrat rulers, the fairness doctrine will mean nothing may be stated but liberal ideology. The US will be like China, a totalitarian state with no individual rights. The only difference will be that China is becoming capitalist, while America will be an atheistic, Communist, Muslim state.

Who is the one guy who has already co-authored and successfully passed a plan that silences Conservative organizations 60 days before elections, and leaves the leftist media to go unchallenged on television and in the print media?

Hint: His name doesn’t start with an “O”, but that would be fairly close.

I know it was a rhetorical question.

And this is exactly my frustration. Taken as a whole, the MSM, the Internet, Talk Radio, .... all opinions are given equal time (IMO). However, if you are selective and regulate the speech in Talk Radio and no other medium, then an imbalance will occur.

Besides, Liberal talk radio is not at all successful. Probably mostly because Liberals don’t really want to listen.

Besides I bet that most Conservatives were driven to talk radio because the MSM was so biased. I know I was.

So, who are they trying to reach, convert and control? Not Liberals, but Conservatives.

‘Political Correctness is a doctrine, fostered by a delusional, illogical
minority, and rabidly promoted by an unscrupulous mainstream media, which
holds forth the proposition that it is entirely possible to pick up a turd
by the clean end.’

In a word, the Fairness Doctrine is a turd.
