Tyson Foods says that Labor Day is still a holiday, but not for the union employees at the Shelbyville poultry processing facility, who will be taking off the Muslim holiday of Eid al-Fitr instead.
Meanwhile, the union that negotiated the controversial contract at the Shelbyville plant has removed the original press release announcing the holiday change from its web site, and the union president has described the backlash to the decision as "bigotry."
The union had stated in a June 19 press release that 700 Muslims worked at the plant, while Tyson repeated Tuesday that there are only 250 Somalis of the 1,000 union members employed there.
Some readers expressed outrage after the Times-Gazette reported that the Retail, Wholesale and Department Store Union (RWDSU) had successfully negotiated a contract at the Shelbyville Tyson facility that took Labor Day away as a paid holiday and replaced it with the Muslim holy day Eid al-Fitr.
Since the T-G broke the story last Friday, it has received national attention and has become a hot topic of discussion on talk radio, the Internet and national TV, including Fox News Channel.

BOYCOTT TYSON
IT’S THE AMERICAN THING TO DO
I “regret” that Tyson Foods, regardless of the composition of its work force, has forgotten that it is located in the United States of America, and thus should respect the traditional holidays and institutions of our republic.
I further “regret” that Tyson is too cowardly to stand up to the Islamic fascists and is thus enabling the ongoing, further balkanization of America.
Okay, so what country is the other 450 muslims from?
Always preferred Perdue.
Why Tyson, and not the union?
BOYCOTT TYSON FOODS
What in the world are we doing importing all these Somalians? I keep reading reports of their murdering and raping all over Europe. Sounds like some sort of PC madness.
Tyson didnt have to go along with trading the labor day holiday.
Also, recently read an article about high tb rate among the somali workers.
Enough to turn me off
It just may be bigotry.........but that is our right. They forget that they can’t tell us how to feel or act. If we don’t like what they are doing, which they have the right to do, we also have the right to not purchase their products if we disapprove of their actions. Sorry Tyson, you made the wrong move and slapped this country in the face. If you don’t care about your profit margin..........do what you want.

“Why Tyson, and not the union?”
And do you have suggestions on how to boycott a union?
JUST CELEBRATING THE HOLIDAYS THAT AMERICANS WON’T CELEBRATE..............
Hey Tyson and/or the Retail, Wholesale and Department Store Union: you better hope lots of muzzies like chicken, 'cause your business among everyone else is about to drop like a stone.
—because Tyson is the company—I’ll boycott the union by not buying any of their garbage-—
Somali are also the cabbies in MN who won’t carry seeing-eye dogs or people with wine in their bags.
I think for the most part they are easily bullied by their imams, but some actually want to change the U.S. into Ameristan.
What American holiday is next? The 4th of July?
Of course, throw out the bigotry card anytime people disagree on kow-towing to a politically-correct group.
Already on the boycott list since this story broke. Buh-bye Tyson.
It may be possible to find other employers organized by this union.
I have been boycotting Tyson’s ever since he appeared on my radar screen in the early clinton years.
1. He started out his career as a drug-smuggling mobster.
2. He was one of clinton’s earliest supporters and closest buddies.
3. Clinton returned the favor in many ways, including his criminal actions during Tyson’s corrupt takeover of a beef supplier.
4. More important as far as the chickens go, clinton made sure that none of Tyson’s plants were ever inspected, so they were probably the dirtiest chickens you could buy.
5. I don’t know what has happened since, but it is only too noticeable that Bush has almost never reversed those kinds of criminal actions on the part of the clintons, from the day he entered the White House and excused clinton’s buddies who had ripped all the W’s off of the computer keyboards and generally vandalized the place. So I presume that the corrupt Tyson still has a free pass on sanitary conditions in his plants.
6 I don’t support giving American jobs to foreign workers brought in on the cheap, especially Muslims.
So, do yourself and our country a favor and BOYCOTT TYSON.
I don’t understand the outrage. They replaced a pinko-commie labor day holiday with an Islamo-fascist one. Just a sign of the changing times amoung leftists, who are shifting to more of an aliance with the Islamo-fasctists.
I regret I won’t be buying chicken strips for the kiddies anymore.
I represent the company, he represents the (unionized) workers. If he asks to work over Christmas in order to not work on the first day of deer season, what's the problem here? I have to stand up for Christ?
In one single day Tyson was cited for 68 sanitary violations involving mainly getting chicken poop on the chicken.
Unfortunately, even though you buy Purdue, Pilgrim's Pride, etc. instead of Tyson your kids get their product in the form of restaurant chicken fingers. KFC and all chains use Tyson.
How could anyone enjoy a Tyson product knowing full well that their plants are full of muzzies?
Tyson is an illegal alien employer. Wanna bet most of those cult members are also illegal aliens? I no longer buy anything from Tyson foods.
People should not eat meat. Meat is “suffering on a plate.”
New news!
That’s what makes it so delicious.
Quaker Oats in Cedar Rapids, and A&P have this bunch.
Two really good reasons to boycott Tyson, (on top of the numerous other reasons), they dropped Labor day as a holiday and replaced it with a pagan religion one, and if one of their moslem employees get a case of the “Kill Infidels”, have no doubt they will try and poison the food stuffs they work with.
One small step for Somalis. One giant leap for islam.
I don’t buy Tyson except as a last resort because of their Clinton ties anyway but now I just won’t buy chicken at all if Tyson is my only choice.
“There’s no question that there is a lot of bigotry against Muslims and that this agreement has clearly touched a raw nerve among those who are prejudiced against them,”
Count me as one of them. These people would never allow such a thing to happen in their own stinking countries. I will make it a point now to NOT buy Tyson products.
How about SUBWAY and WallyWorld?
I went to a Greek restaurant once where the lamb was suffering on the plate. But I simply blamed the chef, and never ate there again.
So a commie holiday is replaced by a muzzie holiday. Big deal. At least they didn’t mess with memorial day or vet’s day.
...and Quaker is owned by Pepsico.
That was one of my questions last week.
And that seems to be why the union removed their original press release.
The original press release said there were 700 muslims there but the new one, issued Tues., stated that "many of the company's 1,200 workers are Muslim."
Apparently someone's count was just a bit off?
It's all in the full article, and Tyson is spinning things as hard as they can, from what I can see. I'm getting dizzy trying to keep up.
I for one am not buying their frozen products again. They were quite good and sold at Sam’s and Meijers.
The union president is right, I’m a “bigot”, I hate Islam and everything it stands for. I guess I’m comitting a “hate crime” too.
Tough darts Tyson.
Labor day is an All American Holiday
It originated back in 1882, when unions were honorable
What’s next thanksgiving?
This doesnt surprise me coming from you, I remember your sympathetic posts regarding illegals
I think you are on the wrong site man
“What American holiday is next? The 4th of July?”
Christmas probably, because they don’t believe Jesus was anything more than a prophet.
I do not regret that I will never buy another product of this company, not now, not ever.
Somalis are in this country as refugees, not "regular" immigrants. In other words, they're here legally & basically don't have to deal with a lot of the standard immigration-type concerns (raids, deportations, etc)
"There's no question that there is a lot of bigotry against Muslims and that this agreement has clearly touched a raw nerve among those who are prejudiced against them," Appelbaum said in the prepared statement. "However, the RWDSU has always understood that unions are only strong when they work to protect the dignity of workers of all faiths.
"That includes Muslims. Our union may be the first to negotiate this kind of agreement, but I have no doubt that others will follow our lead," Appelbaum said.
What pure unadulterated bull shiite! When was the last time a labor union in this country did anything at all to protect Christianity???
If we don't start fighting this kind of accomodation and capitulation every time we see it we're going to wake up one morning to sharia law. Look at what's happening in Europe and the UK...it can easily happen here.
If the poor tomato growers in Florida can be boycotted for not paying their pickers another penny a box, we can boycott Tyson for deliberately soliciting enough muslims to give them a majority in their plants and not hiring local Americans.
Again, I don't like the idea of muslims playing any role in our food chain.
I’ll be bypassing Tyson products also.
