Many workers on Verizon project are in U.S. illegally
The Virginian-Pilot ^ | 3 Aug 08 | Tim McGlone

Brenda Smith and her husband became curious last winter about the workers who showed up in their neighborhood around Old Providence Road in Virginia Beach.

Without any notice to her, the largely Hispanic crew began digging trenches in her front yard and shoving orange tubing into the ground. She tried to ask them questions, but they didn't speak English.

Concerned about the growing number of illegal immigrants in Virginia, Smith decided to find out whether the men in her yard were here legally. She learned they were part of a $23 billion Verizon fiber-optic project intended to bring state-of-the-art television pictures and Internet connections to millions of homes - one at a time.

After several confrontations with project supervisors, she was told the ditch diggers were indeed here illegally. The Verizon subcontractor they were working for was removed from the job that day.

"I thought I had a right to inquire about who comes on my property," Smith said in an interview at her house.

It would nice to find a way to hammer Verizon but they deliberately insulate themselves with subcontractors.

typical response by MSM

A Virginian-Pilot investigation over the past six months has found that many workers on the Verizon project are in the country illegally, performing back-breaking work that most Americans simply won’t do.

I use Cingular but they probably do the same thing.

Your post reminded me of an article I read today. Unrelated to this subject. I don't want to hijack this thread but found this interesting.

There is an investigation going on about government workers to see if any have bought high school diplomas and college degree from a place in Washington, Seattle I think that turns these diplomas out by the hundreds if not more. I thought that was kind of scary.

An American wouldn’t be down in the ditch with a shovel, that’s true.

We’d use a backhoe or a ditch-witch, and with one man, one machine and a bit of diesel fuel, do the work of 20 to 40 men.

By coincidence, there is a crew who has been laying cable in my neighbor for the last week. They have a backhoe and a ditchwitch but I’ve also seen them doing a little shovel work. No latinos though. I guess they haven’t made it this far north yet.

I'm glad you posted this. The utility dug some sort of ditch across my front yard last year. No illegals, just 2 white guys and some digging tool that ran a nice furrow up the yard. They laid the cable or whatever and then filled it in. Probably took all of 25 minutes. Hardly back-breaking. We've got machines, why do we need illegals?

So what does this neighbor look like? Maybe they ARE doing the work that American's won't do.

Give Verizon a break. They only make a few zillion a year, and they need that low wage illegal labor to stay in business.

It’s good for the customer too. Sometimes the Verizon workers will even fertilize your yard for free!

Time for a Senate investigation:

"Mrs. Smith, have you been serviced by Big Cable recently?"

"Several times this past week, Senator Clinton. Have you?"

"Did they usually enter your premises from the front?"

"Sometimes through the backdoor, Senator Craig. They were polite and asked first, so I waved them all in..."

;^)

The Spokane newspaper released all the names- you can check their database. They have found the obvious government workers already (the geniuses who used .mil,.gov, etc. email addresses.) I checked my state list of buyers and actually saw someone I knew in high school had bought himself an MBA.

Maybe times have changed, but in the 1980s, I supervised jobs where entire crews of Americans were in 8-foot deep trenches installing sewer lines and making live sewer connections. Not a single illegal among them. I take that back, there is no way for me to know. Not a single man among them didn’t speak normal English without any hint of a hispanic accent. The math there says, none were illegal immigrants.

Ex-cons with felony convictions have a tough time getting jobs. What jobs they are allowed to do, many employers don’t trust them or want them around. In bridge construction on the San Francisco-Oakland bay bridge work, we had a lot of ex-cons with felons on the construction crews. The ironworkers were heavy on ex-cons. All union. Tough guys.

Illegals need not apply. I’m not saying we had no illegal aliens in construction. We have a bunch of hispanics and I’m sure a good many of them were illegals with all the right forgeries. But ex-cons need work at liveable wages too, and the flood of hispanic illegals has hit them right between the eyes.

For anybody who feared for my life on the project, don’t forget that a lot of felonies are paper felonies or at least are not violent crimes.

When Baby Bush said illegals do jobs Americans won’t do, he forgot there are plenty of very different kinds of Americans who need jobs and lose them to illegals.

Our small local cable company had crews of illegals working on laying cable. None spoke a word of english.
