Oil May Become GOP's 2008 Issue. Cost of Gas Touches a Chord With Voters
The Washington Post ^ | July 27, 2008 | Michael D. Shear and Paul Kane

Four-dollar-a-gallon gas has done something that few Republicans thought possible just a few months ago: given them hope.

United behind a renewed push for offshore oil drilling, Republican members of Congress and the party's presumptive presidential nominee, Sen. John McCain, think they have found their best political issue of the 2008 campaign.

McCain strategists and GOP leaders on Capitol Hill say the issue, which polls suggest Americans favor by healthy margins, lets Republicans demonstrate their plans to address the anger over high gas prices as well as the broader economic distress that many voters feel.

Because most Democrats, including Sen. Barack Obama, are opposed to increased drilling, McCain and the GOP have already begun casting their rivals as unconcerned about gas prices and unwilling to wean the country from foreign oil.

It can indeed be a winning issue. The cost of gas touches everyone.

The Democrats do not have any realistic plans, yet try to stop the only plans that can help: drill here, drill now, pay less, and don't forget nuclear.

The gas prices are especially hard on the "working poor" whose case the Democrats pretend the champion, yet, when it comes to taking action to help them, the Republicans are the ones who have realistic solutions and the Democrats are actually trying to stop them, resulting in continued dependence on foreign oil and higher gas prices.

IF the Republicans can make this case logically, clearly, and forcefully to the American people, we may even take back Congress.

IF they can circumvent the MSM, it’s definitely a winner!

We've been in bed with the Rats for decades but we've finally seen the light.

That'll play well.

I predict that the cynical manipulation of this one issue won’t make up for the Republican Party’s departure from the principles that once made it a great party.

The price of oil is the #1 issue in the campaign.

May become Hell! They could probably win back the house if they take advantage of the situation.

If you can not drill, you guarantee that your energy will come from foreign sources. Everything the DNC does, everything the environmentalists do, increases the leverage our foreign suppliers have over us.

Politicians may paint themselves as environmentalists when they obstruct energy projects but the truth is that they are carrying OPEC’s water. They can cover what they do with all the enviro platitudes they want to, but the fact is that they are serving OPEC’s interests. They guarantee that our billions will continue to flow into their coffers.

Nancy Pelosi is trying to run out the clock on this.
Bush needs to call for a special session of Congress.

Yes, but, misled voters blame the high prices on GWB and Cheney, both with oil backgrounds!

“The Democrats do not have any realistic plans,...”

What other issues are the Leftist/Socialists distracting us from by their brazen inaction on Energy issues we desperately need?

They are up to something.

” McCain and the GOP have already begun casting their rivals as unconcerned about gas prices and unwilling to wean the country from foreign oil.”

Combine this theme with Obama’s elitism.
Obama cavorts around the world at taxpayer expense in his fuel guzzling plane (complete with new Obama symbol painted on the tail) while americans are struggling to pay for gas and wondering how they’ll pay their upcoming heating bills.

The elitist Obama doesn’t care about how american pay for gas. He doesn’t even care to visit wounded soldiers despite his desire to be commander-in-chief.

Hillary nearly finished off Obama with the elitist theme.
McCain needs to revamp it and combine it with the gas issue.

I have a more favorable feeling that McCain could win this fall, if he keeps pushing this in their face.

The Dems will recognize that Obama could lose and will have to dig their feet in the coastal sand and more loudly oppose the drilling to keep their eco-fanatic followers voting for Obama rather than Nader, cause they'll need every vote.

If they fail to push, they would have to run more to the 'exploration' side with the hope that the issue would be less divisive because the candidate's shared the same stance. But with that Flip-Flop the RNC would have INCREDIBLE commercials about how Obama will say Anything.

Since the Obamarama European Tour ended, he hasn't gotten a huge jump in polls. His support has reached a plateau, and may be eroding beneath him.

So, sadly, the electorate shall likely vote McCain. He's going to be seen the "Lesser of Two Evils".

“The elitist Obama doesn’t care about how american pay for gas.”

Exactly. Republicans need to hammer this home to the people every single day, between now and election day. For this election, “it’s the gas prices, stupid”.

The Democrats’ answer is to tax and ration — in other words, they just want to use it to control the people, not to help them. They oppose sensible solutions, such as drilling in ANWR and off shore, and nuclear energy, they don’t want to solve the energy problem.

Here is a good article:

Democrats’ energy plan equals high gas prices

Drill for oil today or DRILL election day (Don't Re-elect Insipient Lollygagging Loonies)

The choice belongs to the Rat Party (formerly the traditional, patriotic Democratic Party.

Team McCain Conference Call: Energy

by Ed Morrissey

http://hotair.com/archives/2008/07/25/team-mccain-conference-call-energy/

“With demand swelling from the American electorate to increase supply, if you’ll pardon my pun, it’s small wonder that Team McCain wanted to talk about John McCain’s energy policy today. Nancy Pfotenhauer, a senior adviser on domestic policy, hosted the conference call today.

Nancy started off by highlighting the hundreds of billions of dollars going out of the US for its energy needs. Gas prices have a “severe impact” on the economy; almost all goods have increased because of distribution costs, but food has also increased because of the ethanol mandates Obama supported.

It’s not only irrational but irresponsible to ignore vast energy resources while pursuing unrealized technologies. Congressional Democrats have blocked the responsible policy. “

We still have about the worst possible Republican on this issue, and others. From June 17th:

“Yet by giving states the final say, McCain also is less likely to alienate voters in Florida and other coastal states who fear drilling will bring pollution.”

http://tampabay.com/news/politics/elections/article628630.ece

Has McCain backed off this leave to the states suck-up? If not, that’s not much of a policy change, and will amount to little. He needs to stop mealy mouthing around and put out a real energy plan that advocates drilling off all our coastlines, in ANWR, and inland, and more shale oil development as well as viable alterntives.

He’s the worst possible candidate, and will blow it for us if he doesn’t make some real changes is his domestic production proposals. He’s just mealy mouthing now, sort of like: “I got the message,” which he’s since forgotten about.

bumper-sticker

Contact your Congress critters to let them know that you are tired of high gas prices.

U. S. Senate

U. S. House of Representatives

And don't let the dimocrats go home until they have passed a drilling bill.
