GOP Senate challenger Steve Sauerberg called Dick Durbin's patriotism into question during a taping of a radio broadcast to air Sunday morning on WBBM 780-AM. Noting Durbin's opposition to a constitutional amendment banning flag burning, Sauerberg said the founding fathers "never had to deal with ultra-liberal Americans who hate their own country." When asked if he was referring to Durbin, he said "I think hes an ultra-liberal. Whether he hates his own country, I cannot determine for the gentleman, but that he "wonders a lot" about Durbin's patriotism.
Sauerberg also attacked Durbin for a speech he gave in 2005 condemning an FBI report on American treatment of detainees in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. Durbin compared the detainment to the kind of treatment people experienced under "Nazis, Soviets in their gulags" and something worthy of Pol Pot. Durbin apologized for the comment, but Sauerberg has called that statement an "unforgivable sin against the brave men and women who serve our country in uniform," and "nothing short of treason." Durbin spokesman Joe Shoemaker responded, saying "I dont think thats what people are looking for. I think people are looking for constructive discussion on issues and not scorched-earth, old-style politics."

Dick Durbin called American Soldiers Nazis. He is not worthy to burn the $h!t of these great Americans. He is the perfect incarnation of the slime that represent today’s political class. May God condemn them to the special Hell that they deserve.
Does opposing an anti-flag burning amendment mean that you hate the USA?
I’ll disagree.
I oppose an anti-flag burning amendment. It really is a silly use of an amendment.
Durbin has provided plenty of other examples. Also anyone who thinks a liberal opposes such things for the reason you cite is silly. Liberals really do detest patriotism anyone who spends any time reading what they have to say on the issue or listening to them or looking at their voting record knows this. I’m glad that Sauerberg is taking this tack. I hope come his debate with Durbin he hammers him on the Pol Pot comments.
Its been a consensus for a while that the first conservative politician who stands up to these jackass liberals, will win. And win big. I’m glad someone has showed a spine.
Looks like this Sauerberg is going to beat Turban Durbin relentlessly over the head with his own words. Should be interesting to see how this tactic works out.
I agree with Eagle Eye. As much as I dislike Durbin and flag burning, I oppose any laws against flag burning. Flag burners usually elicit only disgust for their causes.
Brave doctor standing up in liberal land.
Even if it were to become an amendment, it would be reinterpret by the other legislative branch of our government know as the Supreme Court.
Dick Durbin is a traitor.
>May God condemn them to the special Hell that they deserve.
I would prefer that we hang them.
God is, of course, free to do anything that he wants with them after that.
He certainly is. Any U.S. Senator that makes statements like he did comparing us to the likes of Nazis, Soviets and Pol Pot should be thrown out of office. Coming back later and apologizing doesn't cut it, he already spoke his true feelings.
“Looks like this Sauerberg is going to beat Turban Durbin relentlessly over the head with his own words. Should be interesting to see how this tactic works out.”
If he does you can be assured the Chicago Tribune and the Chicago Sun Times will not report it.
I agree. There are any number of real issues but some Republicans talk about flag burning as if it is some great problem while they evade real issues. If a flag burning amendment gets passed and is upheld in court, the left will bring on a series of amendments - amendments to make it illegal to criticize Islam or homosexuality, etc. If the leftists were smart, they would agree to a flag amendment if the Republicans agree to have them set up kangaroo courts to persecute people for politically incorrect speech. There are Republicans stupid enough to go along with that. The flag does not protect your rights, the Bill of Rights does.
I’m with you. Any attempts to get an anti-flag burning amendment are foolish and hypocritical.
After all, it is just a piece of cloth. No need to start acting like mooselimbs and how behave when someone so much as damages a page of their koran. Besides, no one has a right to not be offended in this country.
Durbin’s comments about our troops removed all doubt in my mind.

Last week’s Rasmussen poll said that Durbin is ahead, 61%-27%. How do you which poll is more accurate?
There is not ONE noteworthy conservative in a high position of power on Sauerberg's campaign, his whole staff is "moderate" GOP insiders who want to govern as Durbin-lite.

Andy Martin calls his opponent, "Gun control Sauerberg"
[Primary challenger Andy] Martin noted that that after he challenged Sauerberg on Sauerberg's plan for more gun control, Sauerberg did not deny the accusation. "It was surreal", says Martin. 'I got up in front of a bunch of gun owners and told them Sauerberg wanted a little' more gun control and Sauerberg did not deny the accusation".

Sauerberg: "I Have Qualms..." about overturning Roe v. Wade.
This past week, on the anniversary of the Roe decision the Republican Candidates for the U.S. Senate all attended a forum sponsored by the Illinois Family Institute, which has made audio from the event available. Be sure to listen to Steve Sauerberg talk about his "qualms" about overturning Roe, and Andy Martin's defense of the status quo, and hear Mike Psak be the only candidate to come out in favor of not only overturning Roe, but also cutting off federal funding for any organization that provides abortion services.
I was right the first time. There is only one truly pro-life candidate for the U.S. Senate in Illinois: Mike Psak.

ACTIVIST JUDGES
PRIMARY CAMPIAGN INTERVIEW -
Jeff Berkowitz: As a senator, you are going to have a choice in confirmation of judges. Would you have a litmus test? Would it matter to you whether the judge [wannabe] wanted to overturn Roe v. Wade or the judge [wannabe] supported Roe v. Wade?
Dr. Steve Sauerberg: I dont think it is appropriate to have a litmus test
Jeff Berkowitz: Including that. So, you could see yourself
Dr. Steve Sauerberg: Including that. Thats just not appropriate. Thats not the way judges should be chosen.
Jeff Berkowitz: So, you could see yourself confirming for the Supreme Court a judge who is AVOWEDLY pro-Choice?
Dr. Steve Sauerberg: It could happen.

"PERSONALLY" OPPOSES GAY MARRIAGE, BUT...
"While he defines marriage as between a man and woman, he DOESNT think a constitutional amendment banning gay marriage is necessary.

Conservatives steam over Sauerberg staffer IL GOP candidate for U.S. Senate Steve Sauerberg stunned social conservatives last week when he announced the addition of a HOMOSEXUAL RIGHTS ACTIVIST AS HIS CAMPAIGNS NEW PRESS SECRETARY. Christopher Barron, 36, was the point man for the Log Cabin Republicans in their 2004 campaign against President George W. Bush's effort to add a federal marriage protection amendment to the U.S. Constitution.
After discussion about the revelation broke out last week on Illinois Review (see "Sauerberg: Personnel is Policy"), state pro-family leaders -- including talk show host Sandy Rios and national activist Peter LaBarbera -- voiced outrage Monday on the air over Sauerberg's apparent political snub.
"It is inconceivable that Steve Sauerberg would so needlessly alienate the pro-family conservative base in Illinois by hiring a veteran homosexual activist for his campaign," said Peter LaBarbera, founder of Republicans For Family Values (www.rffv.org).
Within weeks of President Bush's amendment announcement in 2004, Barron and the Log Cabin Republicans launched its first ever $1 million ad campaign criticizing the president's effort and ultimately withheld endorsing Bush in his 2004 presidential re-election bid.
The LCR ad was designed to embarrass Bush by purposely pitting the President's position in support of the marriage amendment directly against his VP Dick Cheney's 2000 debate comments.
LCR protest ads ran in home states of Republicans who sponsored the effort in Congress. As the group's political director, Barron was quoted widely in the national media during the heat of the federal marriage debate.
In a May 11, 2004 Rocky Mountain News story, Sauerberg's now-press secretary Barron told reporter Peggy Lowe about the LCRs' determination to make two Colorado lawmakers "regret" their federal efforts to protect traditional marriage

Increase fuel economy standards on cars and trucks.
Enhance our nation's rail capacity. Trains are the most efficient means of transporting large amounts of manufactured goods, and the railroad industry has a proven safety record. In fact, trains are three times more fuel efficient than over-the-road trucks.
