Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama’s wife, Michelle, complained the government’s $600 economic stimulus check was only enough to buy “a pair of earrings” while stumping for her husband.
“You're getting $600 - what can you do with that?” Mrs. Obama said in Pontiac, Michigan last week. “Not to be ungrateful or anything, but maybe it pays down a bill, but it doesn't pay down every bill every month. The short-term quick fix kinda stuff sounds good, and it may even feel good that first month when you get that check, and then you go out and you buy a pair of earrings."
She made these remarks at a “working women’s roundtable discussion.”
Although Mrs. Obama has been praised by fashionable outlets like Vogue magazine for her sense of style, her comments about $600 earrings reinforces an unflattering image of the Ivy-league educated Obama lawyers. They’ve both been called “elitist” several times though the course of the presidential campaign season.
Mr. Obama’s former Democratic rival Hillary Clinton called him at “elitist” for telling donors at a private fundraiser in San Francisco that “bitter” Americans in places like Pennsylvania “cling to guns or religion.”
Mrs. Obama has similarly come under fire for saying her husband’s candidacy made her proud of her country for “the first time in my life” and encouraging women to “move out of the money-making industry into the helping industry” in Zanesville, Ohio—one of the poorest areas of the nation.
Hey, I’ll bet some of those “rocks” would make pretty fine earrings. LOL.

The Obama’s are looking for more welfare for their people. People in the ghettos of Los Angeles, Detroit, Atlanta and all the other pit holes of this country will love them.

Ahhhh, so a one-time $600 payment isn’t worth anything but raising payroll taxes and capital gains taxes on the 50% of the population who owns stocks in one form or another will help pay the bill? Wow...wish I could have gotten that smart by going to Harvard........................................

Interesting how Phil Gramm’s comments were universally condemned, even by his own candidate, and reports of Michelle’s are pretty much limited to the blogosphere where we generally preach to the choir.
How did she get a $600 check? I thought she makes 300K a year (plus her husband’s salary)?
Wasn’t the limit on checks up to 150K combined income?

Hey Michelle! Why don’t you pass that $600 along to your Chicago area neighbors who have to buy gas at $4.59/gallon in the City of Chicago?!
I have never paid $600 for a pair of earrings to begin with.
I have more important things to spend my money on. What a complete elitist thing to say. Maybe these two ‘smart’ folks will keep talking.
If the $600/ per person is insignificant, then she should be happy that the Iraq war expenditures have required so little in “treasure.”
I thought this was a parody at first. She really said that?? Unreal. If Mrs McCain had said something like that they would have turned it into big news and her husband would have had to “distance himself” from her.
