De-Fund Planned Parenthood Abortion Business, Members of Congress Say

On Wednesday night, several members of Congress lined up on the floor of the House of Representatives and issued a call for de-funding Planned Parenthood. They said taxpayers shouldn't be forced to fund the abortion business -- even if the money doesn't directly go towards abortions.

Reps. Michelle Bachmann of Minnesota and Chris Smith of New Jersey, both Republicans, organized the special order speeches.

In her testimony on the House floor, Bachmann referenced recent reports highlighting Planned Parenthood’s targeting more affluent young women in her congressional district.

A Wall Street Journal article also cited opening of “express centers in wealthy Minnesota suburbs” with the purposes of appealing to women who are “already doing their grocery shopping, picking up their Starbucks, living their daily lives.”

Bachmann criticized Planned Parenthood for turning abortion into an industry and controlling it much the same way other corporations are accused of controlling other sectors of the economy.

“They are big business. They are the Wal-Mart of big abortion,” she said. “They are the big box retailer. It’s time to end their tax exempt status. It’s a fraud. It is time to stop the public financing of Planned Parenthood -- it is the right thing to do.”

The members of Congress noted how Planned Parenthood is supposed to operate as a nonprofit group, yet, according to its latest annual report, the abortion business posted total revenues of $1,017,900,000 – over one billion dollars.

Nearly one third of that, $336.7 million, came from “government grants and contracts.”

The pro-life representatives chided abortion advocates in the Democratic Congressional leadership for approving a $17 million increase in federal taxpayer funding for Planned Parenthood through the Title X Program.

Responding to the call, Marjorie Dannenfelser, the head of the pro-life women's political group known as the Susan B. Anthony List President, said the funding was a sham because Planned Parenthood's family planning work isn't reducing abortions.

“The idea that Planned Parenthood cares one wit about reducing the ‘need for abortion’ is absurd,” she told LifeNews.com.

“But even if this were a sincere claim on their part, they have failed miserably by their own measure. The number of abortions Planned Parenthood performs continually rises, this year reaching 290,000," she explained.

"It is past time to de-fund Planned Parenthood," Dannenfelser concluded.

According to its own figures, Planned Parenthood does approximately 20 percent of all abortions done nationwide.

Other members participating in the special order speeches included Reps. Joe Pitts (R-Pennsylvania), Paul Broun, MD (R-Georgia), Trent Franks (R-Arizona), Jeb Hensarling (R-Arizona), Jim Jordan (R-Ohio), Doug Lamborn (R-Colorado), Mike Pence (R-Indiana), Bill Sali (R-Idaho) and Jean Schmidt (R-Ohio).

I hope they stop funding Planed (abortion) Parenthood. I don't want my tax dollars paying to murder innocent children nestled in their mothers womb.

One billion a year to kill babies worldwide.

Evil lives....does it ever.

Good Catholic Melinda Gates is good for 30 million or so of that.

How do these folks sleep at night. The arrogance to think they are doing a service as the arbiters of innocent life and death.

Saw this on C-Span - it was 8:30 PM.
It was quite stirring, but the chamber was nearly empty - but at least it got entered into the Congressional record

I spoke with my 15-year old daughter about Planned Parenthood and explained to her that both words in their name are intentional misnomers. They are in business to prevent parenthood and it’s because of unplanned pregnancies. She understood and agreed.

... And why is it that Planned Parenthood opposes doing untrasounds on the fetuses to let the pregnant women (and girls) make an informed decision??? Let them see what they’ll be killing before it’s too late.

You should probably educate yourself on that quote snippet a little. I know accuracy in this matter probably doesn’t concern you but Sanger never even had the slightest intention of exterminating blacks. In that quote, from one of her letters, she was suggesting getting local black clergy involved with her project to reduce poverty in minority neighborhoods. She was afraid because she was white, they would think her birth control suggestions would be interpreted incorrectly.

If you are OK with using lies and bogus propaganda to further whatever your cause is, go right ahead. Personally, I find it dishonest and objectionable.

That said, de-fund Planned Parenthood, like yesterday!

I don’t want my tax dollars paying to murder innocent, ALIVE, SENSING children nestled in their mothers womb, or in the forced process of being removed from their Mother’s womb. Unfortunately, abortion slaughter is one of the primary means democrats have been using to empower their policital capital. With the blood dripping from their hands, the democrat party cannot afford to defund their primary empowerment scheme with women and black people. The abortion slaughter is now —by democrat design—institutionalized in American law and government spending.

You are a propaganda machine, aren’t you?

I’m nor aware that Jews and blacks voluntarily walked into Hitler’s gas chambers, sometimes repeatedly.

Blaming Planned Parenthood for abortions is like blaming Smith & Wesson for handgun crimes. Planned Parenthood would not exist were it not for their voluntary customers. It’s like blaming McDonalds for people being fat.

I just sent my representative, Alan Boyd, the following e-mail. I’m fed up!

“This is a request that you sign on to the move to de-fund Planned Parenthood.

As a devout Christian, I do not want my taxes to further the ability of anyone to take a life through abortion. Don’t give me any excuses that this is a program that benefits anyone. It is plain and simple that it exists to promote abortions and no amount of “good” that it might do is enough to offset killing babies.

You are the representative of the people, and it is time to follow the dictates of your constituents. I daresay that 90% of your constituency are Christians and feel the same way that I do.

If you continue to support the liberal agenda that is in full bore, there are going to be many of us who actively work to remove you from office. We are tired of being ignored.”
