Pakistan's Military Knew Of Nuclear Technology Transfer To N Korea, Says Scientist
7/4/2008 2:52 PM ET
Abdul Qadir Khan, who is considered to be the father of Pakistan's nuclear program, said on Friday that the country's former military regime was aware of the transfer of nuclear technology to North Korea.
AQ Khan told media on Friday that the Pakistani army, which was headed by President Pervez Musharraf then, was aware of the technology transfer as the uranium enrichment equipment was dispatched onboard a North Korean plane under the supervision of Pakistani army officials in 2000.
Khan's statements on Friday contradicts his earlier confession that he was solely responsible for the transfer of nuclear technology to countries like North Korea, Libya and Iran and hints that President Musharraf had complete knowledge of the nuclear know-how transfers.
In recent interviews, Khan has retracted from his confession made in 2004, saying that they were made after being persuaded that it was in the nation's best interests by President Musharraf's military regime with a promise to be freed later.
The disgraced scientist has virtually been under house arrest since February 2004 after admitting responsibility for the transfers of nuclear know-how to Iran, North Korea and Libya.
Separately, Islamabad High Court on Friday issued a notice asking the Pakistani government to respond to an appeal by Khan's wife challenging his "illegal detention."
