WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Republican presidential candidate John McCain wants the U.S. military to be much larger than current expansion plans envision, an adviser to the Arizona senator said this week.
The Bush administration has begun expanding the U.S. Army and Marine Corps to create a combined strength of around 750,000 active duty troops -- a process backed by McCain's Democratic rival, Sen. Barack Obama of Illinois.
But McCain believes an Army and Marine Corps with a combined strength of up to 900,000 troops is necessary, said Randy Scheunemann, an adviser to the candidate on foreign policy and national security.
"Sen. McCain feels the proposed increases are not sufficient. They need to be more, to fully address the challenges we face in the 21st century," Scheunemann told Reuters in a telephone interview.

This will put a bee in Obamas bonnet!
This will put a bee in Obamas bonnet!
that’s going to go over real big in an election year when other problems seem over whelming, such as the price of oil, inflation coming, etc.
better to get elected president, and then push for a larger military.
Damn! FR is glitchy
McCain is right. Before the Clinton Cutz, the Army had 18 divisions and about 750,000 troops. The Marines were approx. 300,000.
It is not possible to fight one war with less than that. We now know the old “2 war” theory was bogus on that number, but it will allow us to hold back the horde while we decide whether or not to bomb them into oblivion or conscript a WWII sized army....maybe a combination of both.
How does he propose to get the hundreds of thousands of boys?
Don’t worry, the media lied in 2004 and said that Bush was bringing back the draft. MTV even repeatedly interrupted their entertainment shows midbroadcast to spread that lie.
I’ll believe this is part of McCain’s primary agenda for his presidency when he discusses it at a debate and Obama is also put on equal footing to defend his decision to demilitarize our military.
Until then this is more spin from Al Reuters.
McCain has been right on this subject for some time now.
But we need to ease the burden on our troops, while meeting the challenges of the 21st century. Thats why I will call on a new generation of Americans to join our military, and complete the effort to increase our ground forces by 65,000 soldiers and 27,000 Marines.

This guy cant run to the center fast enough can he?
He was right about Gen Shinseki, too.
Mind you, I’m no McCain supporter (yet), but I’ve no problem giving him credit when he’s right. His military expertise, despite Wesley Clark’s grandstanding, is exceptional.
I have a rabbi friend who was Clark’s chaplain...at Carson, I think. (I’ll have to email him.) He really likes Wesley a lot. I always figured Wesley would be above political hit jobs, but his fiasco of the last few days has sure proven that anyone can sell out.
Obama, on the other hand, believes we should make nice with these animals and their supporters and "negotiate" with the state department, and treat the terrorists more like crininals rather than the abject military enemies that they are.
Conscript about 2 million street gang members for fromt line duty, make America safe again.
FR is very sketchy. I had to switch over to Firefox to even get on. Safari just closed up on me.
Now how does McCain get a bigger military? Don’t tell me he agrees with Charlie Rangel to bring back the draft.
Oh well, Happy 4th, God Bless President Bush and our military.
Reagan didnt need a draft to have a 600 ship fleet.
Happy 4th
I do not understand why this process did not start on Sept 12,2001. From what I understand one of the reasons is Guard/Reserve is much cheaper than regular Army troops. Bush has been trying to fight this war on the cheap and instead we get money blown on pork barrell, ethanol subsidies and Bush's prescriptions.
osama obama is so full of crap. he is less qualified than gomer pyle to be commander-in-chief
