Arnold Schwarzenegger dents green credentials with Dodge Challenger
Telegraph ^ | 7/1/08 | Laura Clout

Arnold Schwarzenegger has risked accusations of green hypocrisy by driving around in a gas-guzzling Dodge Challenger Coupe.

The Hollywood star-turned Californian governor has built a reputation as a leading green campaigner and last Friday told a climate-change meeting in Florida: "America is so addicted to oil it will take us years to wean ourselves from it, and to look for new ways to feed our addiction is not the answer."

In an interview last year, the governor spoke of his wish to create "a whole new industry of clean cars and clean engines and components to build those engines."

To this end, he did sell his fleet of Hummers.

But the former actor's green credentials may have been slightly dented after he was spotted driving the coupe in Los Angeles.

The vehicle, which does just 13 miles to the gallon, boasts a 6.1 litre V8 engine and can reach 60mph in under five seconds.

Schwarzenegger, 60, took the car for a spin with his sons Patrick, 14, and Christopher, 10, and his wife Maria Shriver, 52.

The model, an SRT8, is similar to The Dodge Charger made famous by The Dukes of Hazzard television series in the 1970s and 80s.

I can see Aunold’s kids coming home from school pleading with daddy to save the planet, and the trees, and the ozone, and the frigging Polar Bears,etc...etc...

Arnold, just another politician/actor who lives in fantasy land. He probably thinks the Flux Capacitor is real.

Good for Arnold for driving what he likes. It’s a mans car. I envy him. There’s plenty of oil out there if the Dhims would let us drill for it, and refine it.

I think you miss the point. The point is that Arnold is for restricting the vehicle I drive while he drives whatever he wants. He is behind the stupid commission that is going to hand down guidelines for CA soon that will make the whole state, except for the politicians, into a third world hell hole. Drive what he wants and to he** with what anyone thinks? I love that attitude but unfortunately Arnold only wants it for himself and other "elitists", it is just another hypocritical moment brought to us by the idiot from Austria.

In that it was a Dodge, was painted orange, or had a V-8??? In all other ways, it is nothing like the CHARGER used in the Dorks of Hazzardous, since it is a CHALLENGER. The new version of the CHARGER has been out for a few years now.

Vanishing Point did have a Charger as a co-star, but so, of course, did the Dukes of Hazzard.

Challenger.

Idiot. Looks like a Challenger or Cuda. Not a Charger.

Great soundtrack on it, though.

Yes, indeed. Jerry Reed's "Welcome to Nevada" is fantastic, one of his best works.

I had the soundtrack on CD but stupidly left it in the player of a pickup I traded. Went to the place that cleaned up the used vehicles for the dealer but no luck. Right beside the place is a used CD store.

I think there may be a connection. Definitely need to get another one.

I noted to imdb.com that John Amos was the uncredited radio engineer a few years back.

Nice catch.

The author also doesn’t take into account that maybe Ahnold rarely drives this car. Perhaps it’s just a collector car that he occasionally drives. That said ... I don’t have a problem with him owning one. Wish I could afford to have one.

I am waiting on the 500+hp LSA Camaro Z28. Assuming GM doesn’t go bankrupt first.

Really? Why not just replace your pulley system on your blower. That should add about 100 to 125 HP?

Or do you just want a new car?

I already have chip, pulley, tune and exhaust. Also the dreaded tick, TOB and now on my third clutch. I have owned three Trans-Ams and two Mustang Cobras. Might be time for something different.

Good luck with the Camaro.

I owned a Camaro SS 2001 before I got the Cobra. No comparison between those two!
