In a conversation recently, I mentioned as an aside what a great president George Bush has been and my friend was surprised. I was surprised that he was surprised.

I generally don't write columns about the manifestly obvious, but, yes, the man responsible for keeping Americans safe from another terrorist attack on American soil for nearly seven years now will go down in history as one of America's greatest presidents.

Produce one person who believed, on Sept. 12, 2001, that there would not be another attack for seven years, and I'll consider downgrading Bush from "Great" to "Really Good."

Merely taking out Saddam Hussein and his winsome sons Uday and Qusay (Hussein family slogan: "We're the Rape Room People!") constitutes a greater humanitarian accomplishment than anything Bill Clinton ever did -- and I'm including remembering Monica's name on the sixth sexual encounter.

But unlike liberals, who are so anxious to send American troops to Rwanda or Darfur, Republicans oppose deploying U.S. troops for purely humanitarian purposes. We invaded Iraq to protect America.

It is unquestionable that Bush has made this country safe by keeping Islamic lunatics pinned down fighting our troops in Iraq. In the past few years, our brave troops have killed more than 20,000 al-Qaida and other Islamic militants in Iraq alone. That's 20,000 terrorists who will never board a plane headed for JFK -- or a landmark building, for that matter

Monthly casualties in Iraq now come in slightly lower than a weekend with Anna Nicole Smith. According to a CNN report last week, for the entire month of May, there were only 19 troop deaths in Iraq. (Last year, five people on average were shot every day in Chicago.) With Iraqi deaths at an all-time low, Iraq is safer than Detroit -- although the Middle Eastern food is still better in Detroit.

Ann is 100% right. Bush has disappointed us in a lot of ways, but let's give credit where credit is due. If you asked anyone on 9/12/01 if they'd consider Bush a great president if no domestic attacks occurred during the next seven years, any fair person would have answered in the affirmative. Nonetheless, an ungrateful public ridicules Bush as a failure. I'm reminded of Jack Nicholson's line in "A Few Good Men" about "men who rise and sleep under the blanket of the very freedom that I provide, and then question the manner in which I provide it."

America has NOT been al qaeda free since 9-11. There are a number of American recruits who have gone to train and communicate with Al Qaeda since 9-11.

There have been at least 3 convictions I am aware of (Texas and California among them).

Don’t fool yourself that we are 100% Al Qaeda free.

And we haven’t been 100% free of domestic attacks. Granted the Anthrax attacks were on the heels of 9-11.

And then there was the Tampa teen terrorist who stole and crashed a plane. Proof positive that the authorities will lie to us and deny any terrorist intent; they withheld his letter for over 2 months (until after the Superbowl against which he’d made an empty threat).

There was the LAX Israeli airline counter shooting, the campus attack with a car, possibly the Virginia tech killer (his full rant was not released, just vague references to striking out at some people over religion), the DC sniper duo, the Seattle Jewish community center, and who knows what else that was successful.

There are also a number of thwarted attacks (like the attack on the Brooklyn Bridge). We won’t know what all was averted for many years if ever.

We HAVE been safer from domestic terrorism and terrorist attacks on US property around the world than we were under Clinton (I see the WTC 2001 attack as ramping up after WTC 1993, possible involvement in OKC with McVeigh and Nichols, the American embassy bombings, the USS Cole...).

The terorist world wanted a war. They would have continued their agression. The Taliban blew up ancient Buddhist statues in March of 2001. It wasn’t because they’d been imposed upon the muslim community, it was because they were prohibited under Islamic law.
