China's Drilling for Oil in America's Backyard, Republicans Say
Cybercast News Network ^ | 6/11/08 | Susan Jones

House Republicans want the American people to know that right now -- around 60 miles off the coast of Key West, Fla. -- China is drilling for oil, thanks to a lease issued by Cuba.

But 1,200 miles north of Key West, Democrats in Washington are blocking the United States from conducting its own environmentally-safe oil and gas exploration in similar U.S. coastal areas, said a news release from House Republican leader John Boehner's office.

"By prohibiting the United States from taking part in the same type of energy exploration that the Chinese are conducting just miles off our shores, the Democratic Majority on Capitol Hill continues to prove itself complicit in an energy crisis that has saddled American families and small businesses with gas prices that have reached $4.05 per gallon today," the news release said.

"Do congressional Democrats actually believe China has more ingenuity and more concern for the environment than the United States?" Republicans asked.

On Wednesday, the U.S. Energy Department said gasoline prices are expected to remain close to $4 a gallon through 2009.

Republicans are pushing an energy plan that would expand domestic oil exploration and production; encourage the opening of new American oil refineries; and invest in alternative energy sources such as wind, nuclear, and captured carbon dioxide.

Seeing as the only reason we can’t drill offshore near Florida, California, etc. is because of the concern over the environment - I think that IS the point. (If China can drill offshore - why can’t we?)

I’m not sure I understand what you think the point is. If it is the unsavory idea of China in our “backyard”, China has every right to exploit this field from those Cuban leases, as much as I hate to see it.

Bush does not care, as he is a puppet. If Bush did give a crap, he could take this graphic to television 24x7 right now, and people would act on his behalf, NOW!!!

The global authorities cannot have that.

No they won’t. They really don’t want the US Navy showing up at this point. The slightest slurp sound on the wrong side of the line and Cuba would be annexed.

Unless there are drastic changes, the oil companies will either move out of the US or they will be nationalized.

Now, isn’t that special.

Hope and if are subjective terms. My bet is on no hope, until someone with B@LL$ shows up at the OK Coral.

“If the Republican’s had any sense.”

The Republican Party’s elected have turned into the same pandering bunch of phony baloney politicians that infest the Democratic Party.

Very few of them (those in congress) are “for the people” or what was the “American way of life”. Most are for themselves, for their bank account and will say anything to anybody if they can profit from it.

Throw the bums out.

McCain is brain dead, that can be his only excuse. Well, that is unless, maybe, just maybe, he isn’t really in charge. Could that be? Nah, how could it be!

The Chinese don’t have that many offshore drill rigs..so they may have the lease and another company/country doing the exploritory drilling for them. I guess it would be a rig from a country that has trade with cuba.
Somebody from the oil patch must know which rig is drilling.
There aren’t that many of them.

The point is that other countries are taking our oil that we should be getting ourselves, but we can't because the democrats will not allow any more drilling.

The democrats have a lot of short talking points that need to be discredited. One of them is that drilling will not solve the current problem (i.e., it will take years to bring the oil to market). Republicans have to have a short sound bite to refute that argument (i.e., if we don't start drilling now, then oil will be even higher in the future when this oil could have come on market). Republicans also need to have a short sound bite that explains that renewable energy will not solve the problem now or in the future, despite what the democrats claim and that it is wishful thinking and foolish to abandon a proven source of fossil fuel for the hope that we can make windmills supply our energy sources.

With high gas prices, the republicans should be ripping the democrats a new one on this issue. It is so easy it pains me to see the missed opportunity.

The point is that American companies could have either gotten the same leases, or drilled into the same fields from international waters, and kept billions of petrodollars from flowing into China and Cuba’s coffers.

America needs to wake up!!!

If the Republicans had any sense, they wouldn’t have nominated John McCain as its standard bearer. McCain voted against drilling in ANWAR and in most offshore locations. There are consequences when the party maverick is your nominee.

Actually - the Chinese oil companies lose money! They buy oil at world prices, then refine it and sell it domestically at low prices (controlled by the Gov’t, of course).

Isn't this Obama's plan?

Agreed about drilling. But the reason we aren't is because of the environmental concerns. Unfounded concerns in my opinion with all the rules we need to follow.

As for the Cuban leases, U.S. companies can't use them because of our trade embargo with Cuba from what little I have read on the subject.

Bah! Why should America protect its interests?

It’s a “Free Market” and if the Chinese Communist “Capitalists” want to exploit American natural resources, who are we to say No? I mean, if we told the Communists “NO”, that wouldn’t be a “Free Market”, would it?

Let the “Free Market” rule /sarc

“Free Market” means a steady supply of Glucophage for obese, gluttonous, diabetics - right?

I wonder if the Chinese will share their oil with the addicts in Los Angeles who are commuting 100+ miles per day? Hmmmm...

So what you're saying is they're a bunch of evil crooks.

But what I'm saying is, even if they're evil crooks, IF THEY HAVE ANY SENSE, they'll jump on the DrillHereDrillNow bandwagon, just to save their phony-baloney jobs.

If they're going to be just a bunch of Democrats, who needs them? Why not just elect REAL Democrats?

If they had any sense, to keep their stinking jobs, they'd just this once band together and DEMAND that Americans be allowed to drill for American oil on American land and and off American coastlines so that the American can drive to work and have jobs to drive to.

If they had any sense.
