While East Bakes, West Gets Record Cold and Snow (Ski Trails Re-Open in Aspen in June)

From Icecap.com's website:

The Aspen Skiing Company said Monday that it will open up Aspen Mountain from June 13 to 15 for skiers and snowboarders. The company says record winter snowfall has left the mountain covered with snow, leaving behind an average of more than 3 feet of snow on the upper slopes. So, for this Friday, Saturday and Sunday, Aspen will open seven runs and about 45 acres of mostly intermediate terrain that is accessible by the Ajax Express chairlift. And Missoula, Montana’s water park is closing due to cold weather ‘to protect children from hypothermia’.

In the Seattle Times story "Think it’s cold? You have good reason", Susan Gilmore reports “Seattle just experienced the coldest first week of June, according to climate records dating to 1891, said Cliff Mass, University of Washington meteorologist. “Just wait until tomorrow,” he said, when temperatures are going to be even colder. A heavy snow warning has been issued for the Washington Cascades and Olympics as a storm from the Gulf of Alaska plows into the state tonight. Forecasters with the National Weather Service said up to a foot of snow may fall in the mountains as low as 3,000 feet. In 30 years I can only remember two other times when it snowed this late in the season,” said Sam Krahenbuhl, Snoqualmie Pass assistant maintenance superintendent. “One time it snowed on a Fourth of July weekend. This is really rare."While it won’t snow in the Puget Sound area, records for the lowest high temperature may be broken today and Tuesday. In eastern Washington at Washington Sate University in Pullman, it snowed on June 10th.

Mass added: “People are really upset about this weather."He said in the mix of all the statistics, he’s put together (with former Assistant State Climatologist Mark Albright) the “barbecue” index. That’s the number of times since March 11 (the usual start of spring here) temperature climbs to 60 degrees or more a temperature that Mass thinks people are comfortable being outside in."It turns out that this year was the worst year of the barbecue index since 1917,” said Mass. “We only got to 60 degrees 23 times this year. Compare that to 1934 (74) times or 1992 (69) times."Mass said the coldest spring was 1917. This year is tied with 1908 for 2nd coldest, he said. The warmest spring was 1934.

Icecap Note: There has been plenty of cold air to go around this spring. The summer warmth has been suppressed south. This week the heat has has made an intrusion into the east as the cold air has dipped into the west. After a chilly start to the month in the northeast, the first 90 degree days of the season followed last weekend and early this week. Even though cold air is likely to continue to drop into the Pacific Northwest, some of the cooler air will increasingly make its way east and put an end to the current heat.

Record cold in the west?

It was 78 degrees in my part of the west today.

Simply another beautiful sunny day in California.

It is 72 degrees and sunny in my part of the east right now.

Simply another beautiful sunny day in Ohio, now that the thunderstorms have moved through.

this is exactly what man-made global warming does.

You forgot the sarcasm tag. There is no "man made" global warming. This is an entirely normal climate variation. The sun spot numbers have been running near zero for months. That is the precursor to an ice age. There isn't squat we can do to change the climate. The variation was happening before there was a significant population of humans. It will continue long after we are gone. Taxing us into a destitute state is no solution, but it is the only solution favored by Marxist idiots.

We have 55 degrees, blues skies and a 35 MPH wind from the west with gusts to 46 MPH in Pocatello. The forecast maps show heavy snow warnings for southeast Montana and snow advisories down all of eastern Wyoming. We're expecting a mix of rain/snow showers in the Pocatello area this evening.

It's 107 this afternoon in Tempe, with our barbecue index sitting at 100% (i.e., every day since March 11, and probably every day since January 11). You'd be amazed at how easy it is to light charcoal in this weather. Hardly need a match.

Some of the deciduous foliage was severely damaged by the frost last week. The wild roses should be blooming all over the yard, but there are only a few flowers. Dandelions and fireweed are way behind schedule. The place should be like a jungle by now, but it’s just anemic. Glad I didn’t even try corn this year.

Ugh.

Long summer back in 1979 in Idaho Falls, just up the road from you in Pocatello.

First we arrived at INEL/S1W on April 15, the CO told our crew “Last night was the first it stayed above freezing since October ... Welcome to summer in Idaho.”)

Until this year, April 15th was the latest date I had seen snow on my lawn. This year I had 7 inches of new snow on May 1st. The last killing frost this year (thus far) was June 6/7. It's historically May 13th for the last killing frost.

Summer can be quite warm and dry. I've experienced a high of 103F during the day with an overnight low of 86F. After a few of those experiences, I spent the money to repair the air conditioner. I haven't needed it yet this year. At the current rate, we won't use it at all.

I grew up in Calgary. One year it snowed on the last day of school, which in Calgary is June 30. A couple of years later it snowed on the first day of school, which if I recall was August 29.

Summer vacation for Canadian schools is only two months -- July and August. You can see why.

What are you talking about? Don’t you know that it’s hot in NYC and DC? That’s the entire world (well, the entire civilized world outside of Europe and what else matters)!

If NY isn’t cold, the cold doesn’t matter.

I've heard stories about the short summer in Canada. July is really the peak heat period in Pocatello. I really like the Spring and Fall. Mostly shirt sleeve whether without extremes.
