Iran commits to 7 refineries in bid to end exports

NICOSIA — Iran plans to construct seven oil refineries in an effort to achieve energy self-sufficiency.

A senior Iranian official said the refineries would increase capacity by more than 1.5 million barrels per day and end gasoline exports.

The official said all seven refineries would begin operations by 2012, Middle East Newsline reported.

"The construction of seven refineries has started with the investment of 15 billion euro," National Iranian Oil Refining and Distribution Co. director Aminollah Eskandari said. "About 1.56 million barrels will be added to the country's capacity to refine crude oil and gas derivatives."

In 2006, Iran launched a five-year program to increase domestic refining capacity from the current 1.65 to 3.3 million barrels per day. In 2007, Teheran imposed gasoline rationing in what officials said led to a sharp decline in imports.

What does it say about DC when IRAN's energy policy is more sane than our own? They plan to construct seven new refineries which will be online in three years. The goal is 100% energy independence.

Meanwhile, we will elect an outright bolshevik or a cap-and-trade promoting idiot.

Iran exports its crude to, and buys processed / refined fuel from, India and China. I guess they’re talking about ending that “export”.

So what? I own cats smarter than congressmen. The only thing our leige-is-laters are competant at is winning elections. And winning elections is the start sum total and end of their abilities...

It has something to do with the way the government subsidizes gasoline production. They import almost all of their supply now.

I don’t get it either.

Anyway, the domestic goal is 100% energy independence. Go figure.

I praise any country, Iran and China included, for doing the intelligent thing in the face of today's global shortage of oil production and refining capacity.

And I curse our own stupid leadership for not allowing the same thing to occur in our own country.

Probably because they don’t have the EPA to deal with.

If we really wanted to invade and cripple Iran, we should airdrop millions of environmentalists, not soldiers, into their nation. That would jack them up for decades to come.

It’s called “starving the beast”. (The Western World)

They know that any reduction in what they export will cause World prices to stay high and even keep climbing. The evidence of economic disaster is beginning to show and they see the correct cause.

Too bad our own government is completely brain dead. They couldn’t see a train coming even if they were tied to the tracks.

They don’t have the EPA or the Greens to contend with.

The last paragraph in the article clarifies the situation:

In 2006, Iran launched a five-year program to increase domestic refining capacity from the current 1.65 to 3.3 million barrels per day. In 2007, Teheran imposed gasoline rationing in what officials said led to a sharp decline in imports.

Iran is improving its domestic capacity to refine crude oil into gasoline so it can stop having to import the finished product to make up the shortfall.

That said, the writer at the news service really does need to brush up on the definitions of and use of the words "import" and "export" in situations like this.
