In New York City, where taking illegal handguns off the streets is high on the mayor’s agenda, thousands of firearms make it into the hands of law enforcement officers each year.
Once they’ve been seized in crimes, whether after long and ignominious careers or short but violent ones, and once their owners have been prosecuted, the guns must be destroyed, never to be used again.
The New York field office of the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives periodically takes the guns it gathers to an industrial stretch of road in Westchester County, about 20 miles north of Manhattan, to a scrap metal processing plant in Elmsford, N.Y. There they are chopped up into tiny pieces and sold for about 25 cents a pound.
In the words of federal agents, it is where guns go to die.

Some departments sell or auction guns and use the revenue to buy new guns for officers, a practice that has raised questions about whether the weapons would simply wind up back in the hands of criminals. The bureau sometimes gives guns that were used in crimes to other federal agencies, like the Navy or the Fish and Wildlife Service, said Special Agent Joseph G. Green, a spokesman for the bureau’s New York office.
Reselling such a gun on the open market risks obscuring its history, he said.
“It is smart policing to destroy the weapons,” Mr. Green said. “Even if they are put back into circulation, they can never be traced to a second purchaser, they can only be traced back to the original retail purchaser.”

Our govt fails to lead by example.
Our govt should unilaterally divest itself of all govt guns.
No guns for cops.
No guns for soldiers.
We need to show the world they have nothing to fear from us.
Criminals will respect gunless cops for their principles.
China/Russia/Iran etc will respect the USA for voluntarily disarming its armies.

BATF used to bring weapons too our EOD teams to destroy as we had a Tuesday and Thursday 3000 pound demolition shot to destroy classified materials and munitions for Uncle Sugar and the DEA’s Dope, and national labs classified parts etc .......We told em due the nature of our process we would only destroy the serialized frames vs the entire weapons that were just too much frag too pick up on a surface clearance later. Lots of parts etc ....barrels, springs , grips, trigger groups stocks etc ......never made it on those shots !
