The Real Public Service (Thomas Sowell)
Jewish World Review ^ | May 27, 2008 | Thomas Sowell

Posted on 06/02/2008 3:20:00 PM PDT by prairiebreeze

EVERY YEAR ABOUT THIS TIME, big-government liberals stand up in front of college commencement crowds across the country and urge the graduates to do the noblest thing possible -- become big-government liberals.

That isn't how they phrase it, of course. Commencement speakers express great reverence for "public service," as distinguished from narrow private "greed." There is usually not the slightest sign of embarrassment at this self-serving celebration of the kinds of careers they have chosen -- over and above the careers of others who merely provide us with the food we eat, the homes we live in, the clothes we wear and the medical care that saves our health and our lives.

What I would like to see is someone with the guts to tell those students: Do you want to be of some use and service to your fellow human beings? Then let your fellow human beings tell you what they want -- not with words, but by putting their money where their mouth is.

You want to see more people have better housing? Build it! Become a builder or developer-- if you can stand the sneers and disdain of your classmates and professors who regard the very words as repulsive.

Would you like to see more things become more affordable to more people? Then figure out more efficient ways of getting thousands of things from the producers to the consumers at a lower cost. That's what a man named Richard Sears did a century ago. In the process he rose from near poverty to become one of the richest men around.

History shows that the younger crowd lean towards the Liberal side..............until they graduate from college. Then they see how their world really is and go to the conservative side. Some never change and stay in lala land, expecting everyone to serve them.

McLame would guarantee a win if he would pick sowell as VP, but I know he is too clueless to even consider it.

Chuchill once said “if you are not a liberal when you are 20 you have no heart, if you are not a conservative at 40 you have no brain”

I remember my step daughters graduation a couple of years back. It was an all girls college and they had some NPR repoter who I guess was well known, although you couldn't tell by me. Anyway, she was fairly accomplished having traveled the world and been in the presence of leaders, etc.

Her message in a nutshell, after the most boring and rambling speech I've ever sat through, was girls go out there and do your best but don't waste your life chasing your dreams because dreams are elusive and they never come true.

So insightful, so inspiring.

Sowell is 6 years older. He would be older if elected than Ronald Reagan was when he retired from the presidency. There's no way Republicans would nominate a ticket with two candidates over 70.

Thomas Sowell is a national treasure.

Those who have helped the poor the most have not been those who have gone around loudly expressing "compassion" for the poor, but those who found ways to make industry more productive and distribution more efficient, so that the poor of today can afford things that the affluent of yesterday could only dream about...

Nobody says it better than Thomas Sowell.

My daughter graduated college last year and with no small amount of trepidation I prepared to listen to one of the co-founders of YouTube give the main commencement address. (He was a graduate of the university a couple of years back and of course a mega-kazillionaire)

However I was pleasantly surprised to find myself enjoying his speech which was well delivered and especially the story of YouTube itself and their journey with bringing it into existence.

I’d expected to hear a young idealistic liberal semi-rant but didn’t.

I read a commencement address by PJ O'Rourke a while ago...I think it was here on FR. He basically said to go out and get stinking rich if you really want to contribute to society. :)

How come it links to a May 27th, 1999 article?

I mean, it's timeless and all that ...

What clued me was when he mentioned statistics from the beginning of the century, and he was talking about 1900.
