Isolated tribe spotted in Brazil
BBC News ^ | 5/30/08 | BBC

One of South America's few remaining uncontacted indigenous tribes has been spotted and photographed on the border between Brazil and Peru.

The Brazilian government says it took the images to prove the tribe exists and help protect its land.

The pictures, taken from an aeroplane, show red-painted tribe members brandishing bows and arrows.

More than half the world's 100 uncontacted tribes live in Brazil or Peru, Survival International says.

Stephen Corry, the director of the group - which supports tribal people around the world - said such tribes would "soon be made extinct" if their land was not protected.

'Monumental crime'

Survival International says that although this particular group is increasing in number, others in the area are at risk from illegal logging.

"We did the overflight to show their houses, to show they are there, to show they exist," the group quoted Jose Carlos dos Reis Meirelles Junior, an official in the Brazilian government's Indian affairs department, as saying.

"This is very important because there are some who doubt their existence."

He described the threats to such tribes and their land as "a monumental crime against the natural world" and "further testimony to the complete irrationality with which we, the 'civilised' ones, treat the world".

I would think that generations of inbreeding would be more of a danger to their survival than anything else.

I searched FR for “tribe” and nothing showed up. But this is a BBC article, the previous post is from Reuters.

I suspect that the word “tribe” is not PC. Try another keyword like “native peoples” or “aboriginal”.

I don’t think so, My brother-in-law who can’t read a map was just asking about them this past weekend.

The way things are going, those huts might be Luxury Condo’s in a few years. EnviroNazis want that kind of standard of living for us.

I'd be a bit suspicious in that the picture takers have a vested interest in stopping logging of the Rain Forests and destroying habitats of natives....not that I disagree with that.

However, 2-4 huts in a tiny clearing the size of my back yard and a handful of people (had that many family over for breakfast this morning) - does not look like a viable, sustainable group. And where are the curious little kids?

'could be staged. It's been done before.

WOW!! Talk about paranoia. You dismiss an entire people because ONE photo of most likely one corner of their village doesn’t meet your exacting specifications?

Seems a little weird to me.

Lucky devils, it would be the life.

Oh and for all those who use this site as a “conversion forum” here’s your real chance! There can’t be that many groups who have not heard the ‘Good News’ right?
This could be the last one. The Rapture could be at hand!

So I would advise all my self-assured, self-righteous evangelical brothers and sisters to drop what their doing, buy a ticket to Brazil, and head in the bush. Don’t worry about a returm trip, you’ll be floating in the sky before you know it!

They need to deliver some clothes, technology and modern conveniences to these people. If they look at it all and choose not to use it so be it.

I would imagine, that given the choice that they don't even know exists. they would choose modern life.

I have to say they are great at camouflage. A plane could hardly discern the huts from the ground. But their red skin is a giveaway...
