Actress Cate Blanchett and 40 others have come forward to support photographer, Bill Henson, after Australian Prime Minister, Kevin Rudd, hinted that possible criminal charges await Henson, whose latest exhibit was shut down due to images of naked underage girls. More than 20 pictures were confiscated, including one featuring a naked 13 year old girl and one of a naked, unconscious girl being carried by two other naked subjects. In a letter signed by Blanchett (mother of three), the Prime Minister is urged to "rethink his public comments" and to not go forward with any formal charges. The Daily Telegraph reports:
The potential prosecution of one of our most respected artists...does untold damage to our culture reputation," the letter said. "We suggest that the...criminalisation of laying charges against Mr Henson, his gallery and the parents of the young people depicted in his work would be far more traumatic for the young people concerned than anything Mr. Henson has done."
Maybe I'm just old fashioned, but I can't shake the feeling that if I was a 13 year old girl, an old guy asking me to pretend I just took some roofies so he can take some pictures of me naked and defenseless would be pretty traumatic...

This applies to the “artsy fartsy” crowd that thinks just because something MIGHT be called “art”, that anything goes. Obscene is obscene.. Hollywood is so far around the bend on so many issues, they only make themselves look worse.

Pictures of children naked are not legally considered pornography in this country. I’m not sure if they are anywhere in the world (I presume in Muslim countries they are).
There are subcultures in society of nudists which include people of all ages, some of which operate in this country (I wonder if there are freepers who would support a CPS raid on a nudist colony to protect the children from nakedness?)
Boycott the guy’s pictures if they offend you, I fully support that. But throw a guy in jail for taking a picture of the naked human form? Unless there is some direct sexual tone to the pictures, I say not.
I have obviously not (and don’t want to) seen the pictures in question, but the description in the story doesn’t sound like they are sexually pornographic.
Frankly, the picture the media splashed all over of that creep Jeffs kissing a 12-year-old was a lot more pornographic than a picture of a naked child. Maybe we should go after everybody who looked at THAT picture under child pornography laws.

Well, sometimes you just want to go for the most outrageous name for a band... Especially if there's bad taste involved... It gets you attention. For instance, there was "Steely Dan." I guess most people today have no idea what that name implies, but when the band first started out, they used that name for the shock value... Heck, I was in a band back in high school named "Phydeaux (Fido) and the Carcinoma Angels"
