WASHINGTON -- In the quest to increase Americans' access to broadband Internet, federal regulators are considering a new plan: get someone to give it away free.
The Federal Communications Commission is considering a plan that would require the winner of a planned airwaves auction to offer free wireless-Internet service to most Americans within the next few years.

IF this happens, how many small ISPs will go out of business and how many competing companies will have to lay off thousands of workers that support Internet service people will no longer have to pay for?

WASHINGTON -- In the quest to increase Americans' access to broadband Internet, federal regulators are considering a new plan: get someone to give it away free. Because downloading high-quality porn is a Constitutional right.

This isn’t about giving it away free - it’s all about control.
To: mnehrling
When the government “gives” you “free” internet they will control your internet use. Government restrictions can ruin any industry.

It won’t be ‘free’ - someone will have to pay for it even if they receive no benefit. As a rural inhabitant of flyover country, I expect I’ll be paying, and not getting any access.
It’s getting frustrating that even Republicans these days seem overwhelmingly on the side of regulation, government control of the economy, price controls, etc. Where are the voices of liberty and free markets?

“Internet traffic on that free area would also face content restrictions to prevent users from looking at pornographic or obscene material, according to FCC officials. Details about how to define what content would be unacceptable for viewing over the free network is still under discussion.”
No porn and yes, comes with heavy government restrictions. Government bureaucrats deciding what you can see or not see.

Well I can imagine as soon as the Obamessiahians gets in charge, FreeRepublic will be declared pornographic. That will be attempted regardless of who is elected. Washington is petrified of the internet and has been scheming from day one how to get control of it.

Because downloading high-quality porn is a Constitutional right. Yup. It's guaranteed by that Right to Privacy.

Plenty.
Just another step towards Socialism. One can only imagine the stipulations placed on that free wireless ISP.
