Seeking a balance between outreach and enforcement, Miami is launching a nearly $1 million crime-fighting initiative in Overtown that will mix police patrols, video cameras -- and suit-and-tie wearing Muslims. The stepped-up policing seeks to deter would-be lawbreakers without making Overtown residents feel ''invaded,'' in the words of Miami Commissioner Michelle Spence-Jones. Which is where the Muslims come in. Along with budgeting hundreds of thousands of dollars for increased police patrols and the installation of surveillance cameras, Miami is spending $150,000 on a ''Peacemakers'' pilot program run by a nonprofit with ties to the Nation of Islam.

Instead of Peacemakers it should be called Pork for Protection. That should make those muskies exit the program.

When I was living in the DC suburbs twenty years ago, the residents of a housing project in Anacostia finally had enough of the incompetent DC Metropolitan Police not doing anything about the drug dealing and violence in their area. They called Calypso Louie’s boys. And the NOI crew made sure the local TV stations had cameras there when they arrived.
The next day, several cars rolled up, and a whole bunch of immaculately attired, very muscular, very scary-looking black men got out (with cameras rolling), armed with baseball bats and other large blunt objects, and proceeded to clean house. If one of the local low-lifes was unfortunate enough not to relocate himself in time, he got an ass-kicking and some help moving on. And despite beatings being caught on camera, the DC authorities were too lazy, too corrupt, too incompetent, or too scared of bad PR to prosecute the NOI squad.
So I’ll say two things good about the NOI. One, they seem to take cleaning up neighborhoods pretty seriously. And two, they have REALLY good tailors. Because it’s hard to keep your suit looking good while beating down a drug dealer, but they can do it!

But if they succeed in cleaning up Overtown, where will “The First 48” on A&E go to film in Miami?
There’s still Ghoulds, Perrine, and West Homestead, to name a few. For the last few years, many of the unsavory characters have been moving south from Overtown and surrounding areas.
Okay, as long as they’ve got a place to film more episodes. :)
Seriously, though, it is interesting to see how the blight migrates from one area to another. We’ve noticed here in our town as it spreads from the more urban areas out into the formerly nice close-in suburbs.
People only need to read the koran and hadith to understand how the ‘Religion of Pieces’establishes a partnership. The only time they’re happy is when they’re killing, maiming, or destroying.
