It is. The Church feeds a lot of people and these sorts of things almost always pay for themselves. It’s not like money paid to fix it up for visitors is somehow lost forever to aid the poor.

True, the Church could make trillions by selling all its artwork that it has acquired over the ages, but it won’t do that. Rather, the Church sees that it has a historical responsibility to preserve it for future generations. Because of the Vatican we have some of the best examples of Greco-Roman sculpture in the world, they have preserved that legacy.
