It does. I was lucky enough to get a tour a few years ago during my old college roomates ordination.

Any idea how much the Church spends annually feeding, clothing, healing, educating and burying the poor?

True, the Church could make trillions by selling all its artwork that it has acquired over the ages, but it won’t do that. Rather, the Church sees that it has a historical responsibility to preserve it for future generations. Because of the Vatican we have some of the best examples of Greco-Roman sculpture in the world, they have preserved that legacy.

HappyinAZ ~ I think “the Church” has some poor and starving members around the world that they could have fed with the money.

NYer ~ The Catholic Church ... also has an obligation, like any other institution, to preserve historical monuments.

Any organization? islam consistently destroys all that came before. I believe they view this as their obligation.
