Bill Clinton's Post-Presidential Life
Slate ^ | 5-5-08 | Juliet Lapidos

Carol Felsenthal's new book about Bill Clinton's post-presidential years, Clinton in Exile, is often catty, occasionally malicious, and overly reliant on unnamed sources. It's also pretty boring; when Felsenthal's not muckraking, she's content to trot out newspaper accounts of Clinton's foundation work and his appearances on the guest-speaker circuit. But don't fret—with Slate's reading guide, you can zip straight to the water-cooler-worthy gossip.

I bet Bill is having a hard time figuring out why he, the supposed darling of the Democrat party, isn’t getting everyone to vote for his wife.

Actually Bill was never very good about getting anyone to vote for any candidate beyond Bubba Clinton.

That’s his track record and part of “The Legacy”.

Thank you Rush Limbaugh and Operation Chaos for finally driving a stake thru the political heart of the Clinton Crime Family. Now even most Democrats hate the Clintons.

Clinton won both times on the back of extreme Republican incompetence, not on the strength of his campaign skills.

“When President Truman retired from office in 1952, his income was substantially a U.S. Army pension reported to have been $13,507.72 a year. Congress, noting that he was paying for his stamps and personally licking them, granted him an “allowance” and, later, a retroactive pension of $25,000 per year.

When offered corporate positions at large salaries, he declined, stating: “You don’t want me. You want the office of the president, and that doesn’t belong to me. It belongs to the American people and it’s not for sale.”

Even later, on May 6, 1971, when Congress was preparing to award him the Medal of Honor on his 87th birthday, he refused to accept it, writing, “I don’t consider that I have done anything which should be the reason for any award, Congressional or otherwise.”

We now see that the Politicians have found a new level of success in cashing in on the presidency, resulting in untold wealth. Today, many in Congress also have found a way to become quite wealthy while enjoying the fruits of their offices. Political offices are now for sale.

Was good old Harry Truman correct when he observed, “My choice early in life was either to be a piano player in a whorehouse or a politician. And to tell the truth, there’s hardly any difference.” I, for one, believe the piano player job to be much more honorable than current politicians.”

If Bubba, and the hangers on who helped run his party, was president when WW11 stated we would have lost the war..

Bubba and his ilk would have been run out of Dodge during those times....The Democrats were a much different party then..

Old Hill would have been carring a lunch bucket, and working the swing shift at the shipyard too! ( She says she’s patriotic, but in reality she wouldn’t drive rivets either) Thank God there was NO room for the skank in politics also....We would be talking German and Japanee if there was!!!

It's also pretty boring...

That pretty much says it all right there. Bill Clinton in a nutshell. What a waste of time. I'm sure it won't turn out to be a huge waste of paper, though.

Yes, the current multi-million dollars per year Presidential lifetime sinecure is disgusting and anti-American.

"He's just fundamentally flawed.",

This is the summary... and huge understatement.

“Actually Bill was never very good about getting anyone to vote for any candidate beyond Bubba Clinton”

He was neer elected to POTUS with more than 43% of the vote, either. If it weren’t for Perot, he wouldn’t have won. So “The Legacy” is more “The Myth.”

Just to keep our credibility intact I would like to offer a correction; Clinton won 49% of the vote in 1996. You are correct that he never won a majority of the votes.

Thanks for the correction. The 43% stuck in what’s left of my mind (which I should never count on).

Political offices are now for sale.

And have been for a long time.

Consider what the historian Tyler wrote 100 years ago, speaking of Athenian Rome:

"A democracy cannot exist as a permanent form of government. It can exist only until voters discover that they can vote themselves largesses from the public treasury. From that time on, the majority always votes for the candidate promising the most benefits from the public treasury..."
Now consider all the "bennies" Hillary and Obama are offering if elected.

What a crying shame our once glorious country has been reduced to this. Pray for our country.

Those of us living in the dark ages and suffering with 56K dial lines appreciate very much your linking to the less graphic intense printer friendly version.

IMHO, this should become standard FReeper protocol.
