Texas Senate 2008 (Texas in play?)
Rasmussen Reports ^ | May 5, 2008 | Rasmussen

Posted on 05/08/2008 9:07:19 PM PDT by balch3

It’s time to add United States Senator John Cornyn to the list of potentially vulnerable Republican incumbents in Election 2008. The latest Rasmussen Reports telephone survey in the state find Cornyn leading Democratic state legislator Rick Noriega by just four percentage points, 47% to 43%.

Any incumbent who polls below 50% is considered potentially vulnerable. That is especially true when a little known challenger is so competitive in an early general election match-up. The race for President in Texas is also fairly competitive early in Election 2008.

Noreiga leads among voters earning less than $40,000 a year. Cornyn leads among those with higher incomes. Cornyn leads among Evangelical Christian voters and other Protestants. Noreiga leads among those with a different faith background. Both candidates do well within their own party and are fairly evenly matched among unaffiliated voters.

Democrats are likely to expand their majority in the Senate this year by picking up several Senate seats currently held by the GOP. Early polling indicates that many states offer potential Democratic gains including Virginia, New Hampshire, New Mexico, Colorado, Minnesota, Oregon, and Alaska.

Cornyn is viewed favorably by 50% of the state’s likely voters, unfavorably by 37%.

Noreiga earns positive reviews from 45% and negative assessments from 39%.

Thirty-four percent (34%) of voters say the state’s Republican Governor, Rick Perry, is doing a good or excellent job. Twenty-eight percent (28%) say he is doing a poor job.

President George W. Bush doesn’t do as well. Just 39% of voters in his adopted home state say that the President has done a good or an excellent job. Forty-five percent (45%) rate his performance as poor.

The only poll that matters in November. Still, I didn't think it would be this close in Texas of all places.

Of the lasts 3 major figures Texas has sent to Washington, 2 have been major embarrassments*;
the third is John Cornyn, famous for his staunch opposition on the Immigration Bill Committee to John McLame’s efforts to insitutionalize Amnesty!
.
.
.
* I’m referring of course to Bush the Younger, and K.Bailey Hutchison, R-Uranus.

It's not, and it won't be.

I continue to be highly offended that President Bush polls so low in Texas and nationally. Nationally he is now polling around 27 percent. That is absurd! Especially in light of the strong upswing in Iraq and the global trends toward President Bush in a variety of nations.

As someone who loves President Bush, I am beginning to believe that Osama Bin Laden is more admired by Americans. This is really beginning to anger me. I think the God Damn America crowd is growing on the Right and the Left and I detest it.

President Bush has been a great leader for our country.

President Clinton almost certainly raped women and committed sexual assaults but was much more highly regarded.

I don’t think it is enough to blame the media. I think conservatives have thoroughly back stabbed this President.

I hope it is not true, but it looks like it is going to be a bad year for freedom. Even if McShamesty wins, and he will destroy what is left of the republican party. We will once again be a party of Rockefeller. He will reign during a period of economic downturn and we will be even worse off in two years at the 2010 elections. The dummocrats may get a veto proof majority.

It’s easy to understand why Bush’s rating is so low. Precisely because he has his own mind. To the left, he is a personification of whatever they hate from the right. To the non-social conservative moderates, he is too religious. To some people on the right spectrum, he is not rightist enough and has ‘bertrayed’ their values (which is incorrect, since he came to office by campaigning for ‘compassionate conservatism’). Since many in the left like anything that against America, we might have socialists or 3rd world leaders have higher ratings than W (I’m not sure if there’s a poll about this, though).

His new tone not only screwed him but help damage the Repub party. The Dems and the dem media have been peddling the same lies over and over and after awhile it works. Bush has put us all in the bad spot by trying to be nice to his sworn enemies . It was a Fools move.

A very unifying President wouldn't you agree?

Who else could have lead three quarters of Americans to agree on anything at all...?

Ironic that the consensus he has created is one of ambivalence to himself.

America must be involved in the world. But that does not mean our military is the answer to every difficult foreign policy situation – a substitute for strategy. American internationalism should not mean action without vision, activity without priority, and missions without end – an approach that squanders American will and drains American energy.

Yes...you are correct that this will be a bad year for freedom, but not because John Cornyn is in any danger of losing his seat.

This happens in every Texas Senate race I've witnessed over the last 2 decades. The msm gets a hold of a few polls showing their favored rat candidate within the MOE and they start having pipe dreams about winning... but then in November the GOP wins by 20+

I stand by my statement.

And you are right to do so. He has messed up many things, but he got the big things (SC Judges and the war on Islam) right. Just think what Al Gore or Kerry would have done in his place.

We can't deny he has got Immigration ludicrously wrong, to your countries great detriment. But he has been, imo, 65% of a great President.

Why yes, of course Cornyn is in danger. Why wouldn’t he be? Running in Texas against an opponent with barack mcgovern wrapped around his neck places John in real danger of not breaking 75%. The people of Texas will not embrace socialism period.

A couple of years ago, John O’Sullivan wrote in “National Review” that the Dims would take over Texas in the not distant future - based on demographics. He was not happy at the prospect.

President George W. Bush doesn’t do as well. Just 39% of voters in his adopted home state say that the President has done a good or an excellent job.

The "adopted home state" line was accurate about George HW Bush, but W grew up in Texas, lived in Texas for much of his life, married a girl from Texas, ran businesses in Texas, became governor of Texas, and is returning to Texas after his presidency is over. To apply the "adopted home state" line to him is just plain idiotic.

I was about to post this same thing. He is a Texan.

Whatever else he is not (a conservative, a decent communicator), he is a Texan.
