Rep. Vito Fossella (R-N.Y.) said Thursday that he had an extramarital affair that has resulted in a three-year-old daughter in a statement released through a public relations firm.
My personal failings and imperfections have caused enormous pain to the people I love and I am truly sorry, Fossella said in the statement.
While I understand that there will be many questions, including those about my political future, making any political decisions right now are furthest from my mind, the lawmaker, who was arrested for drunk driving last week, said. Over the coming weeks and months, I will to continue to do my job and I will work hard to heal the deep wounds I have caused.

Buh Bye. It’s inevitable that in short order NY will not have any GOPers elected to Congress.
Man, the hits keep coming...I can’t take this anymore. This is what happens when a political party (GOP) starts emulating the opposition (demonrats). hint hint McCain...
He blowed up real good... and so did she. Therein lies the rub. :-}
We lose a RINO in a Democrat district. You can bet we lose the seat in November.
I knew he must have been an (R) before I read it simply because she had the kid...
Yeah, the district it’s slightly more D than R now. This used to be Susan Molinari’s seat and Vito won 7 straight elections since Susan quit Congress. We were probably going to loose it anyways...sad though....
Most of Fossella’s family are still Democrats. The DWI was the horrible thing. The Staten Island Dems have quickly forgotten their favorite catch phrases. “It’s only sex.”; “It’s personal.” “Let’s move on.” Fossella should be punished for the drunk driving. That being said, I hope Staten Island doesn’t get stuck with another Democrat like John Murphy, Sr. of Abscam fame.
Unfortunately, one of the DemonRat candidates running in the Dem primary for Vito’s seat is a far-Left loon. If he wins and goes on to take over Vito’s seat it will not be good for Staten Island and for the Repub party in Congress.
Something about him makes me think that McGreevey may have had his eye on him too....
Took them only three words to get to Republican.
If he was a d’RAT it might not get mentioned at all.
no hesitation in party ID for this story
At least he’s heterosexual. He sinned, but everyone sins sometimes: Clinton, Vinge (? that Louisiana Republican with the call girls), Spitzer. It doesn’t mean that seat needs to go to the Dems. Just get a strong Repub candidate and if Osama is the Dem candidate and there is a McCain tidal wave he’ll be elected, along with a lot of other Republicans.
Daily Gotham
I hope it doesn't jeopardize a Nascar proposal for a track on Staten Island. :-)
It’s now John McCain’s fault this guy couldn’t keep it in his pants.?
“I knew he must have been an (R) before I read it simply because she had the kid...”
Wow, that hits home.
Rep. Vito Fossella (R-N.Y.) said Thursday that he had an extramarital affair that has resulted in a three-year-old daughter in a statement released through a public relations firm.
Rep. Peter King (R-N.Y.), who said he was one of Fossellas closest friends in Congress, said the political future of his New York colleague can be dealt with in due time.
Republican Conference Chairman Rep. Adam Putnam (R-Fla.) was more outspoken regarding Fossellas political future. If his district is anything like mine, I suspect that its over, he stated. Putnam added that he was not in a position to comment on whether the GOP would be best served if Fossella were to step down so a replacement candidate could be found to run in the strongly Republican district.
Im sure that the [National Republican Congressional] Committee is looking at all of their options and trying to find out what Mr. Fossellas options are and what the best options are for holding onto that seat, Putnam said.
Good work... place that side-by-each next to a similar story about a democrap and try to find his part affiliation anywhere...
"....Vinge (? that Louisiana Republican with the call girls),..."
David Vitter
He’s a shoe-in to win the Democrat primary to fill the seat he just lost.
Hey, Vito is such a strong family value guy, he had TWO families!
What a guy!
What a putz!
The media will make sure that every living person knows he’s Republican.
You must be reading from the Democratic play book. Every post denegrating Fossella has a recurrent theme (family values). He used to be a Democrat. His family still are Democrats. I guess old habits are hard to break. Especially those nasty ones that Democrats seem to possess.
I’m disappointed in the man. The lady who used to hold that seat was a pal of mine.
Looks like the GOP loses another seat. Great.
1) Vito did a lot of bad things.
2) He is not a rino. Above the Mason Dixon line you can be JUST so Republican and below it just so Democrat.
3)While the district LOOKS democrat on paper you can ask the five opponents Vito has beaten if it really IS a democrat district. It is not. The democrat registration numbers are city workers who falsly believe they would be at a disadvantage if they registered Republican.
4) With barack mcgovern at the top of the ticket an steve harrison below him the rat has a very tough sell on Staten Island.
5) If Vito steps down and Jim Oddo the mid Island city Councilman steps up he will not have a hard time holding the seat.
What a sleazebag!
Fossella had that seat for 12 years. Susan Molinari got it from her dad who got it when John Murphy, Sr. and his pal Murtha were in line to get Abscam bribes. Staten Islanders like Fossella and may forgive the infidelity, they MAY NOT forgive the drunk driving which is WORSE.
Amazing, however, how Sue Molinari was able to get away with HER indiscretions for many years.
As a Staten Islander I agree that a good Republican such as Oddo will win.In recent years Republican have won most island-wide elections.
True there is a double standard in the media, but I don’t mind having a higher standard than the Democrats. Just because Clinton was an adulterer doesn’t make it OK. And drunk driving is a crime. This guy needs to go do his time, commit to one of these two women and end things with the other, support his children and do a lot of praying. Surely we can find a candidate with better moral standards to run in this district? And why on earth couldn’t we get the senator in Louisiana who was visiting prostitutes to resign? We have a Republican governor there, he could have appointed a more upstanding Republican and the whole party would be stronger. I don’t understand why we keep suporting these guys. We could do so much better.
Fashion tip to Mrs. Fossella: Tasteful, Chanel-inspired power suits are all the rage at the inevitable press conference where you stand by your man as he admits to all manner of embarrassing goings on. Pearls are a plus as well.
See: Silda Spitzer, Suzanne Craig, Wendy Vitter, Dina McGreevey, Patty Rowland, etc.
How many did Kewesi Mfume (D-MD) have out of wedlock?
Let’s be fair. Those were all when he was a teenager, long before he ever ran for office. I don’t agree with his politics, but he turned his personal life around. You ever seen to the West side of Baltimore? It’s amazing anybody makes it out of there alive...
Isn’t he a convicted murderer too? From his gang days?
It's just a matter of time before the headline reads "Fill-in-the-name brags about affair, out-of-wedlock child"
This will not necessarily end his political career. At least 2 presidents (we know of) had illegitimate children: Grover Cleveland (D) and Harding (R). Rumors that the children existed circulated at the time of their elections but did not destroy their political careers.
But it SHOULD be.
Why?
You have to ask?
It seems unrealistic to expect our politicians to have never sinned, even to have never committed sexual wrongdoings. Here are some examples in addition to Cleveland and Harding:
Jefferson (children with Sally Hemmings, not absolutely proved, but there is plenty of evidence), FDR (his mistress was with him when he died), Eisenhower (Kay Sommersby), Kennedy (fillandering well established), LBJ (well established), Nixon (no known sexual wrongdoing, but plenty of sinning), Carter (same as Nixon as far as sex, but he ‘sinned in his heart’), Reagan (divorced, Patti Reagan Davis apparently conceived before marriage to Nancy Davis), Clinton (goes without saying), GW Bush (alcoholic, apparently former playboy). Truman and GHW Bush: can’t think of anything specific, but must have sinned some time,
If we demand that our politicians should be totally pure, we won’t find anyone who can meet that criterion.
We are talking about sinning while in office. If I was CFO of a public company...and I was arrested for DUI....do you think I would continue to hold my job!?
Hells bells.....I couldn't run for office based on my past! And nobody I know could.
I'm not referring to PAST history.....I am expecting my elected officials to conduct themselves in a legal and moral way, at least while in office. Although that would be minimal.
Those are my standards.
I would hope that the majority agree with me.........
Many of the cases I cited above include sexual wrongdoing while IN office, yet they were good presidents.
Don’t we all sin almost every day? I know I do, and I would find it hard to believe anyone, politician or not, who claimed he/she didn’t.
Because you reason like one........
I am Not a Democrat. I think you are being unrealistic. I vote for the person I consider best qualified to perform the duties of the office and don’t worry about their state of grace.
And if a CEO, otherwise well qualified, is fired because of being picked up for DUI, that’s a mistake on the part of those who fire him.
” I guess old habits are hard to break. Especially those nasty ones that Democrats seem to possess.”
Doesn’t seem to be much difference between the parties, when it comes to sexual (mis)conduct.
Well we will have to agree to disagree. Although I will meet you half-way.....I would want to know the circumstances.
But I hold my elected officials to higher standards, as IMO should you. And would HOPE they would at the very least offer to resign.
Enough said..........
There isn’t much of a difference. I think in order to go into politics requires selling your soul. For the most part all politicians do that. The only difference is how much of their souls they sell. Some of them only sell the parts that make disappoint their constituents. Others sell their souls and the security of their country along with it. Depressing isn’t it?
