BARACK Obama has conceded defeat to Hillary Clinton in today's Democratic White House primary in Indiana but, on the back of a win in North Carolina, offered himself up as the only candidate who could truly unite American voters.
"I want to start by congratulating Senator Clinton on what appears to be her victory in the great state of Indiana," Senator Obama told a rally in Raleigh, North Carolina - even amid uncertainty over who had actually won.
CBS News called Indiana for Senator Clinton, but others were more hesitant and, several hours after polls closed, NBC News and Fox News continued to categorise the race as too close to call.
Senator Clinton later claimed victory in Indiana.
Senator Obama thanked his supporters for his victory in North Carolina, which followed a difficult month marked by new controversy over his fiery former pastor, Jeremiah Wright, and his remarks that some working-class voters were "bitter".
"Because of you, we've seen that it's possible to overcome the politics of division and the politics of distraction, that it's possible to overcome the same old negative attacks that are always about scoring points and never about solving our problems," the Illinois senator said to cheering crowds.
He paid tribute to Senator Clinton as "a formidable opponent", and, while acknowledging that the results were unlikely to end the long-running and bitter battle between the two rivals, said the Democrats would come together to fight Republican John McCain in November's presidential election.

His speech was great...the guy can speak...and that goes a long way...especially after the last 8 years.
Somebody stole the election in Indiana. I’m not sure who yet, but I’m sure somebody stole it.
If there’s a Clinton nearby we can be guaranteed something will be stolen!!!
Oscar Charlie reigns!
Pass the smelling salts......Hussein swooner on board!
He can only speak when he’s got a cue card and a fawning media. If the press treated him like they treat W, he’d be a much worse public speaker than W. And that’s saying something.
If there is honor among elitist thieves, then the two candidates might still share the spoils, or ballot....
EVERYBODY, CLING!
When he is asked a tough question off script, he stutters and stumbles all over himself. He can’t talk and think at the same time because he apparently has a pea-sized brain.
Apparently so is ‘Operation Eliminate Hillary’
***Operation Chaos is a resounding success***
Whazzamatter, he running away since the dreaded words “election fraud” have been whispered?
Yep, not impressed with his intellect myself, though he is smarter than his idiot wife.
“A very genuine congratulations, I’m sure... “
Yes - as the old expression goes - it’s really “white of him”.
Obama not articulate-but but he is a graduate of the Harvard Law School
Operation Chaos is a resounding success
Sure coulda turned out better. Fox News is still not definitively calling HRC the winner in Indiana, and BHO won by double the poll numbers. I said before that NC required the biggest effort, and it turned out abysmally.
“His speech was great...the guy can speak...and that goes a long way...especially after the last 8 years”
You’ve got to be kidding yourself.
All the clown does is tell us what’s wrong with America. Has he offered any solutions? Most any clown can point out things that are wrong. What’s Hussein going to do about it?
He’ll divide this nation like never before. Screw the idiots that support him.
If you’ve got an “Obama” bumper sticker on your car, you should get another one to put next to it that says, “God DXXX America!”
What's that all about!?
You praise a Marxist, or even Ba'athist, stooge for his silver tongue over an unpretentiously earnest and sincere Methodist man that would have been much more comfortable with the Reverend Spooner than Reverend Wright.
Yeah I know all action no talk is not something you’re used to.
And the Unabomber is a Harvard graduate as well.
Not so fast!
We can still deliver 23000 votes for you Obama!
