Tragedy struck the first filly in the Kentucky Derby since 1999, as Eight Belles went down on the track after her second-place finish today, broke two ankles, and was euthanized.
Showing a sisterhood with the female horse, Sen. Hillary Clinton, D-N.Y., during a trip to Louisville this week had said she was going to bet on Eight Belles to win, place, and show.
ABC News' Karen Travers reports that Clinton told supporters in Jeffersonville, Ind., earlier this week, "I hope that everybody will go to the derby on Saturday and place just a little money on the filly for me. I wont be able to be there this year -- my daughter is going to be there and so she has strict instructions to bet on Eight Belles."
Travers also points out that Eight Belles' trainer, Larry Jones, returned the love. "It looks like it could be the year for the girls," he said. "Eight Belles Im sure would want to endorse."

Just hope others, including Rush et al; will refrain from going there. But suspect, this will cross partisan boundaries.

That horse certainly had the will. I hope she’s happy in Horsie Heaven.
Everybody and everything dies around the Clinton Chinese Mafia.

I just find it ironic that Big Brown beats eight belles to win the derby.
If this was Operations Chaos they would race again in the Preakness.
Too bad though. Eight Belles was a good horse. She will be running in greener pastures now.
Same thoughts here. I don’t know why broken bones in horses legs and ankles can’t be treated like other animals. I understand why a horse might not be able to race again, but I am sure that the owners would rather have their horse living happily in retirement from the sport. I’ll have to ask my brother who is a Veteranarian.
"Hillary sent Chelsea to leverage free publicity by backing (and wagering on) the only female in the race. It would be interesting to review all the clever analogies prepared for the Sunday news shows if the filly had beat the boys."
Poor little Eight Belles. Lke so many others who the Clinton's have chosen to be involved with.. the ending for these unfortunates is not a happy one!!
I remember hearing about Hillary backing 8 Belles before the race. I was only half listening, but remember thinking that I wouldn’t want that kind of backing and really had a bad feeling. When I heard of the tragic injuries I felt that deja vu feeling and had to do a web search to see if I was right about what I had heard. I hope they have big green pastures in Horse Heaven.
On the "Morning Joe" show last week, Friday AM I think, Scarborough actually made a quip about Hillary backing 8 Belles. It was, in retrospect, uncanny. After referring to Hillary equating herself to the female underdog, he laughingly said something to the effect that it would be really bad if the horse had to be put down. I just had it on as I was reading the morning paper, so I wasn't listening very closely and I cannot remember the exact quote.
At best a broken ankle or kneecap......at worst a Fort Macy dirt nap.
I’d be curious to hear your brother’s answer. I think it is because you can’t keep them off their feet long enough for the fracture to heal, but I’m no veterinarian. I stayed at the Holiday Inn once a few years ago, though.
Horses use the frogs in their feet as a secondary pump to send blood back up the legs and around the body. As they walk, the frog compresses and pushes blood out of the feet.
Without the circulation, the feet will have problems and a horse that cannot stand on its feet cannot survive. As you know blood removes toxins and waste and delivers oxygen. Healing can’t occur without circulation.
Some comments about Barbaro’s injury to put it into context: http://www.slate.com/id/2142159/
Thanks for the information. I followed the Barbaro story. It looked like a possible recovery, but was not to be I guess.
If Eight Belles had won, we’d have heard nothing else for weeks.
How true - I think it’s funny how no one will mention that hillary picked this horse - and sent her daughter to the race .... I missed the news yesterday - but today no one mentions it was her ‘filly’....The Clinton Curse....revisited
