Warwick Grits Festival (Warwick, Georgia - 73 lbs of Grits in those pants)

April 12, 2008

Warwick--Funnel cake, barbeque and lost of grits was in order for anyone in the Warwick town square on Saturday.

The town dubbed the grits capital of Georgia held the 11th annual festival this year and organizers said it was the biggest so far. "It was fabulous, fabulous, fabulous, the lord blessed us with rain and the lord blessed us with sunshine, we had an exorbitant amount that got in the grits pit", said Robbie Woolbright.

Morgan Nolen and Olivia Deal participated in a festival favorite, the Quaker Grits Pit. "It was disgusting it stunk really bad," said Olivia Deal. Her friend Morgan Nolen had a great time. "It was mushy and cold, but it was fun though."

Participants dive into a pit of grits with oversized clothes and fill it with as much grits as the can before weighing in. The winner this year came out toting 73 pounds.

"They stuff it down inside their clothing and anywhere the can put them to get over to the scale to keep from losing them before the get there." Said Charles Cowan.

If grits wasn't your thing and barbeque was more your taste there was barbecue. What looks like a regular Volkswagen Beetle was actually a grill, turning out great food for festival goers.

Games and rides were a big hit at the event. Vendors were also on hand to sell local arts and crafts at the festival. If you missed it this year, organizers promised it'll be back again next year. "We'd like everybody to mare their calendars to be here the second Saturday in April," said Cowman.

Warwick, the small Georgia Town, with great food, fun, and lots of Grits!

I will be travelling through Warwick tomorrow. I don’t know about stopping for grits, but I will stop for sausage. They have two great sausage stores: Striplings and Salt Lick.

Yuck. However, I’m a misplaced Southerner here in Philadelphia and I really miss my grits. I can live without the brown gravy, thank you very much, but I sorely miss those grits.

I would KILL for some cheese grits right now.

However, they’re somewhat less than Weight Watchers-approved.

Quaker does not sell yellow grits in Philadelphia, as far as I’ve ever seen. White grits, yes, and they’re not for real Southerners.

Oh yeah, I remember doing the “Turpentine Festival” in Hazelhurst Ga.
Little miss Pine seedling, the Turpentine Queen, and people actually walking raccoons on leashes. what a hoot.

My bad.
Guess I’m not a real Southerner, I don’t recall having yellow grits.
Well yes I do, I think, my mother used to buy Dixie Lily grits in Miami. Reall gritty as I recall.
I use Quaker.... gulp

The Striplings partnership had a falling out. One group moved to a new building about a block closer to Cordele and across the street. They retained the Striplings name. The other group stayed in the old Striplings building and took the name Salt Lick. Both operations are similar and make excellent sausage.
