Israel's secret service has declined to assist U.S. agents guarding former U.S. President Jimmy Carter during a visit in which Israeli leaders have shunned him, U.S. sources close to the matter said on Monday.

Carter angered the Israeli government with plans to meet Hamas's top leader, Khaled Meshaal, in Syria, and for describing Israeli policy in the occupied Palestinian territories as "a system of apartheid" in a 2006 book.

...

American sources close to the matter said the Shin Bet security service, which helps protect visiting dignitaries and is overseen by Olmert's office, declined to meet the head of Carter's Secret Service security detail or provide his team with assistance as is customary during such visits.

Even the worst President of the United States deserves this courtesy. However, on matters of Israeli security, I'll defer to the Israelis.

I don’t understand this one, Carter’s Secret Service detail are operatives presumably loyal to the United States and not personal employees of the former president.

If the Israelis had such powerful objections to Carter (which is understandable) , why didn’t they just deny him a visa and bar his entry.

If I was Isreal, I would find it hard to offer Carter any courtesy.

His behavior has been, that of an enemy. If Carter trust Hamas so much then let them provide his security.

My only concern is putting Secret Service Agents in harms way.

Worst President is one thing. Meddling in foreign affairs w/o blessing of the Administration is another.

Hurrah for the Israelis! We should revoke his passport.

I agree with you. If something were now to happen to Carter..Israel, and NOT the terrorists would get blamed. And it also puts USSS agents at risk.

So Carter is not only endangeroing himself by this unauthorized grandstanding but his Secret Service detail that has to go with him into the lion's den.

I don't blame the Israelis one bit for refusing to help Carter. Why should they. He's proven that he's no friend of Israel and prefers to talk to terrorists rather than the Israeli leadership.

No, you’re wrong! If something happened to Carter the blame would rest solely with him alone! He is the one who decided to meet with terrorists so let him provide his own security. As for the Secret Service agents, who is their oath to - the person they are guarding or the United States of America. The agents should all resign in mass to show their disgust for this incompetent boob meeting with terrorists!

The people most likely to kill him are also the ones benefiting most from his attempts at meddling in the area. I think he’s pretty safe as a result.

Well Carter does think the Palestinians are peace loving people, so why bother with security.

Why waste courtesy on a man who has made it clear he is enthusiastic ally of your worst enemies?

I wish we could snub Carter.

"I think there's no doubt in anyone's mind that, if Israel is ever going to find peace with justice concerning the relationship with their next-door neighbors, the Palestinians, that Hamas will have to be included in the process," Carter told U.S. television network ABC News's "This Week". What does Carter mean when he says, "peace with justice" Sounds like he's saying Israel must make amends with Hamas in the form of reparations.

Jimmuh must not trust his comrades in Hamas that much. I noticed on news clip this morning that he was wearing a bullet proof vest (and he was the only one in the crowd wearing one).....maybe he fears giant wabbits will come after him?

"Even the worst President of the United States deserves this courtesy"

Like HELL he does.

The self righteous old windbag meddler also should lose his Secret Service protection.

The damned old drooler should go back to peanut land, shut up and sit down.

Either way, Israel loses.

Carter would love to go out as a martyr for peace( in his mind, such as it is)

How would you like to be on the SS detail? Poor bastards, no one deserves that.

Doesn't Jimma know how to use e-mail, Instant Messenger? Conference call? Postcards? How about a Jimma MySpace? You know, Ali/Mohamed/etc is my friend (I Like Israeli Pizza Shops on After School Hours!)
