Senator Slur

Font size=4>Disloyalty: Imagine someone who believes our armed forces don't "care about the lives of people" heading a key congressional panel. No need to imagine: Meet Senate Intelligence Committee Chairman Jay Rockefeller.

For John D. Rockefeller IV, great-grandson of his oil titan namesake and for close to a quarter century now the junior Democratic senator from the state of West Virginia, wearing the uniform of the United States was not part of the plan.

For this son of privilege, it would instead be the exclusive Exeter boarding school, the Peace Corps and becoming a "soldier" in President Lyndon Johnson's War on Poverty as a volunteer in VISTA, a kind of Peace Corps for domestic policy.

So it can't entirely be a surprise to find Rockefeller, who has endorsed Sen. Barack Obama for president, insulting the military as he lashed out at the likely GOP nominee John McCain.

"McCain was a fighter pilot who dropped laser-guided missiles from 35,000 feet. He was long gone when they hit," Rockefeller told West Virginia's Charleston Gazette. "What happened when (the missiles) get to the ground? He doesn't know. You have to care about the lives of people. McCain never gets into those issues."

(Leave aside the fact that when McCain's A4E Skyhawk was shot down over Hanoi in October 1967, it was more than four years before the debut of laser-guided munitions.)

Jay Rockefeller exists only to answer the question of whether a more stupid person than Barbara Boxer can inhabit the planet.

I guess Rockefeller feels he is entitled to say whatever he wants since he PAID for his Senate seat with his money. The senior former KKK Senator from West Virginia bought his seat as well, but he bought his seat with taxpayer money used on projects with bears the Byrd name and likeness.

He should be tared and feathered and run out of town on a rail. And they would have done exactly that 100 years ago.

How about once, we stop asking for apologies and retractions and give what we get.

Like, Yeah, Jay, like you really care about people that you and your family have been ripping off and making obscene profits.

McCain and his fellow pilots over Hanoi were manifestly disciplined and professional to the nth degree.

They took great care in planning and execution so that the targets, such as a power station, were precisely struck and so that there was not collateral damage to the civilian population.

There was great danger in carrying out these missions because of that fact and because the North Vietnamese knew which targets would be struck.

The NV, accordingly, pre-focused their guns and ground- to-air missiles on the flight paths of the aircraft. There were extremely dangerous missions.

In Rockefeller's assertion of pilots’ disdain for civilian casualties, Rockefeller takes exactly the line of the North Vietnamese propagandists in that war, and, indeed, that of our enemies in all wars and conflicts including the first Gulf War.

To top it off, Rockefeller is currently chairman of the Senate Intelligence Committee. This is a very sad example of an American.
