Hello all,
I was visiting Nuernberg (alt. spelling: Nuremberg), Germany on Saturday with the USO. Same Bavarian city in which the Nazi war crimes trials were held 1945-1946. It's a very nice city, and I'd recommend a visit if you are in the area. Came across a small anti-China, pro-Tibet demonstration. It warmed my heart, and I had to take pictures:
Not a bad poster!
I love the graphic on her back! I just wished I took the picture at a better angle.
Her sign says, "Solidarity with Tibet!" A sentiment I share.
This is the church in which the demonstration was in front of. It's about 700 years old, of impressive architecture, and it mostly survived World War II. Inside the church they had a video presentation of pictures of the bombings in 1943 and 1945 that damaged the church.
And this is my first contribution as a FR field reporter!
Beijing 2008 - China Play with Human Rights
well done
There’s no such place.......however there is a
Nürnberg, Germany
Yes, but that’s how you spell it without the umlaut.
The lady with the Tibetan flag's sign reads: "Cultural Genocide in Tibet". I can't make out the sign that the guy is wearing.
Thanks.
(My German teacher had a portable Olivetti with a European keyboard. I had a Smith-Corona electric that had the umlaut letters off to one side. Actually I still have it, but it hasn't been out of the case in years.)
When I was in Germany a few years back, I happened to use that pronunciation in a conversation with some of the Germans I was working with and was politely told that there was no such place..........
Nice tight grouping there......
...thanks to Tlj18 for the great field report!!....I liked it so much that I just whipped out my credit card and donated to the FReepathon on the spot...
All of the Germans I worked with were extremely polite and really were helpful in my trying to speak German, having had no previous exposure to it. I got the sense that they were kind of “offended” when I pronounced that city as you did, the American way. They went to great lengths to help me pronounce it the “right” way. I was told that the English and the Americans are the only ones who use that spelling and pronunciation because they could not pronounce the umlaut spelling in the wake of WWII.
I made up an impromptu joke in order to dispel any awkwardness at the time. After the pronunciation lesson I was given,, I told them that I could teach them to speak French in Five minutes!
How? was the incredulous reply.
Simple, I said. First say “Good Morning” in German.
They all complied.
Then I said, Place your three fingers of your right hand in your mouth and say it again.
Oddly, they all complied, and it came out as garbled gibberish.
“You have just spoken French” I said, and they all burst out laffing!...........
it sounds like china is just shocked at the ‘world’s behavior’...they just don’t understand..
Ping
FReeper tlj18: Nuernberg is a beautiful city; I lived there for some time earlier this decade. Check out Albert Durer Haus and Laiserbug - if you haven’t done so already. The churches are also beautiful.
GREAT graphic....BTTT
Mind if I reuse it?
Sure. Not mine.:-)
Take the double dots from over the U and you can put the E in. Same with Muenchen or Munchen, but in the second the U has the double dots over it. I know what it is called, but do not know how to spell it.
