Kids' dress-up day draws Christian ire

An elementary-school event in which kids were encouraged to dress as members of the opposite gender drew the ire of a Christian radio group, whose angry broadcast prompted outraged calls to the district office.
Students at Pineview Elementary in Reedsburg had been dressing in costume all last week as part of an annual school tradition called Wacky Week. On Friday, students were encouraged to dress either as senior citizens or as members of the opposite sex.
A local resident informed the Voice of Christian Youth America on Friday. The Milwaukee-based radio network responded by interrupting its morning programming for a special broadcast that aired on nine radio stations throughout Wisconsin. The broadcast criticized the dress-up day and accused the district of promoting alternative lifestyles.
"We believe it's the wrong message to send to elementary students," said Jim Schneider, the network's program director. "Our station is one that promotes traditional family values. It concerns us when a school district strikes at the heart and core of the Biblical values. To promote this to elementary-school students is a great error."
Schneider co-hosts "Crosstalk," a nationally syndicated call-in Christian radio show.
After the program aired, both the school and Reedsburg School District office were flooded with calls complaining about the event.
The response surprised Principal Tammy Hayes, who said no one had raised any objections beforehand. She said a flier detailing Wacky Week had been sent home with children the prior week, and an announcement was also included in teacher newsletters.

We don’t understand. We asked children to dress up as the opposite sex, how can people think we are promoting cross dressing?
And to think, these people are supposed to be smart.
How about teaching reading, writing, maths, science, and critical thinking skills so that the children shall be prepared for a competitve global marketplace? Tax dollars at “work.”
A clever, sarcastic boy could have arrived at school dressed as he normally does and, when challeneged by a teacher, remark that he is dressed as a bull dyke.
Yeah, public education. This was going on 30 years ago or more when I was in school. Of all of the kids I went to school with only TWO turned out gay and it wasn’t cause we wore “opposite” clothes.
Yep, Johnny can’t read, but he knows how to apply lipstick.

There’s so much crap in public schools that a truly “wacky week” would do nothing but concentrate on reading, writing, English, grammar, math, science, and critical thinking skills.

Hayes said the idea for senior citizen/opposite gender day had actually come from students. The Wacky Week schedule, which changes each year, was created by Pineview’s Student Senate with the guidance of advisor Shari Miller, who also works as a secretary at the school.
Because the people capable are already using those skills and making a good living elsewhere.
My high school’s homecoming week had, among other things, ‘twin day’, ‘retro day’, ‘cowboy day’, ‘cross-dress day’, and even (not sanctioned by the school administration) ‘emo day’, which differed from ‘cross-dress’ day in that.... um... everyone wore poorly done eyeliner. To tell the truth, nobody saw ‘cross-dress day’ as anything other than a fun event to dress silly, like any of the other dress-up days, or turned gay, or really even connected it with homosexuality (except for laughing a little harder at the kid who intentionally acted gay to begin with).
Um, I do possess those skills and I still live and work in the US.
At work one year for Halloween, all the women dressed as men. I went as a computer nerd with my hair slicked back, big glasses with tape on them, a shirt with a pocket protector, pants pulled way too high. (I’m a female engineer)
None of us were gay, and it was pretty funny.
This is a different time and place. Back in our dear old days, homosexuality wasn’t promoted in the schools like it seems to be now. The moral climate in our nation and in its schools is on a downward spiral.
Maybe you will reflect back on this post after you have been here a month and realize that n00bies post the dumbest things.
