FCC trying to reduce monster talk station KKOB (Albuquerque) to 1000 watts
http://www.770kkob.com ^

Posted on 03/28/2008 7:33:37 AM PDT by fishtank

The FCC is trying to get KKOB to reduce power permanently from 50,000 Watts. The morning host said the level the FCC wants is a measly 1000 watts.

DON'T LET THE FCC DO THIS!

KKOB is a monster talk station with Michael Savage, Rush and Hannity featured every weekday.

Have you heard he’s indeed moving to satellite?

Why would Bush remove Liberals from the FCC, CIA, DOJ etc, when he is a “LIBERAL” himself along with John McCain?

My guess it too much anti-illegal talk reaching south of the border.

I can get KOA out of Denver in Eastern New Mexico (I-40) on a good night.

Apply that range from Albuquerque and see how far south it goes.

I listen to Rush and have heard him state he will “NOT” move off of AM radio to Satellite Radio.

As soon as Rush moves to Satellite Radio, A.M. Radio is dead

I've heard him state that he'd never go to Satellite.

Why? Did one of their DJs say something the governor didn't like?

As soon as Rush moves to Satellite Radio, A.M. Radio is dead. The old line broadcast AM/FM media is dead. Just take a look at the CCU deal that is now falling through. No one in their right mind would invest in traditional media outlets.

The only way Rush, Hannity, Laura or any of the conservative talkers move to satellite is if the Fairness Doctrine gets passed into law.

If the congress would ever do that, it would only cause the demise of AM radio but wouldn't shut down the talkers, just move their platform.

Rumors a few weeks ago, but nothing more. If and when he does move, AM radio is dead. Imagine Rush on Satellite. He would have more of a platform than he does now. The current merger, or at least the attempted merger, between XM/SIRI is being held up, I believe, in part because the FCC is trying to figure a way to regulate speech. Howard Stern is there and doing/saying anything he wants without interference. I think the FCC sees this as an opportunity to reign in free speech. If they do regulate Satellite radio, it will be very bad for free speech. However, IMHO traditional radio stations business model is dead. They are in for a very rough road in the near future.

Samehere. For one thing, the money he gets off advertisers is currently more than he’d ever get from meberships via XM.

"I listen to Rush and have heard him state he will “NOT” move off of AM radio to Satellite Radio."

Rush is not stupid, Sat radio will at best have a limited role in the coming Global Internet world. Net Broadcasting is where the action will be.

Correct you are and with FM going to HD my guess is the AM stations will upgrade too.

Rush has said he will stay with who brought him to the dance.

Howard Stern is there and doing/saying anything he wants without interference.

And he absolutely should be able to! The FCC needs to vbe reigned in, not speech. As a matter of fact, the FCC needs to be exterminated.

However, IMHO traditional radio stations business model is dead. They are in for a very rough road in the near future.

Yep. I'm listening to Live365 now, and the quality is so much better than FM or AM. If you have broadband, online radio is the way to go, and has been since about '99.

What’s their rationale?

This gets into the legalities of FCC Clear Channel stations. Class I-A refers to the dominant station on a frequency. They are always 50 kW and nominally non-directional.

The SCOTUS and FCC ruled that radio station KSWS was already on the air as a Class II-A (Class II-As are really de-facto Class I-Ns, except that they are in the 48 states, not in the "non-contiguous states," which is what the Class I-N designation means)and there was no need for KKOB to be a Class I-A "flamethrower".

The move will be to digital transmission, just like digital HD TV. Both AM and FM can offer better signals with less interference, and they can get more channels on the air in less bandwidth.

FCC can do whatever they decide, if they have the engineering “justification” for it. This stinks.
