They also overlook this contradictory passage: In pursuit of their own separate but surprisingly parallel visions, Saddam and [Osama] bin Laden often found a common enemy in the United States. . . . Saddam supported groups that either associated directly with al-Qaeda (such as the Egyptian Islamic Jihad, led at one time by bin Ladens deputy, Ayman al-Zawahiri) or that generally shared al Qaedas stated goals and objectives. So Saddam supported groups that supported Al-Quaeda. That's why he kicked the weapons' inspectors out.

"While Saddam Hussein may not have been Islamic terrorisms Meyer Lansky, he was its Al Capone a resourceful, cunning, and deadly gangster who America had every right, and indeed a vital obligation, to topple." Perfectly stated. The entire article sheds lots of light where the Left media wishes remains hidden.

A May 1999 memorandum to Fedayeen Saddam leader Uday Hussein the despots elder son outlined a bombing and assassination campaign called BLESSED JULY. Among 50 Fedayeen martyrs, selected from an elite terrorist-training camp, The top ten will work in the European field London. The memo continues: After passing the final test the Fedayeen will be sent as undercover passengers, each one according to his work site. MAY 1999 : (UDAY HUSSEIN ORDERS PREPARATIONS FOR "SPECIAL OPERATIONS, ASSASSINATIONS, AND BOMBINGS " AGAINST LONDON, IRAN AND KURDISTAN IN NORTHERN IRAQ ------ See "BLESSED JULY") A new and highly illuminating article in Foreign Affairs draws on hundreds of Iraqi documents to provide a look at the Iraq war from the Iraqi perspective. The picture that emerges is that of an Iraqi regime built on a foundation of paranoia and lies and eager to attack its perceived enemies, internal and external. This paragraph is notable:
The Saddam Fedayeen also took part in the regime's domestic terrorism operations and planned for attacks throughout Europe and the Middle East. In a document dated May 1999, Saddam's older son, Uday, ordered preparations for "special operations, assassinations, and bombings, for the centers and traitor symbols in London, Iran and the self-ruled areas [Kurdistan]." Preparations for "Blessed July," a regime-directed wave of "martyrdom" operations against targets in the West, were well under way at the time of the coalition invasion [in March 2003].
Think about that last sentence.------ "Saddam's Philippines Terror Connection(Yes, Saddam financially supported terrorists)," Weekly Standard ^ | 03/18/2006 | Stephen F. Hayes
Trivia : MAY 1999 is also the month in which al Qaeda allocated funding for their bio/chem warfare program-- the "curdled milk plot" [see anthrax] ; it is also the month in which the founder of the American Iraqi Foundation - an Iraqi-American businessman, his wife and his son are murdered in McClean, VA.

Good article but it does not mention that Saddam was a U.S. Ally during the days of Jimmy Carter.

Good article but it does not mention that Saddam was a U.S. Ally during the days of Jimmy Carter. What do you have that supports that? Iran was the U.S. ally in the region until Jimmy Carter dumped the Shah.

Saddam sought to have Iraq play a leading role in the Middle East. Iraq signed an aid pact with the Soviet Union in 1972, and arms were sent along with several thousand advisers. However, the 1978 crackdown on Iraqi Communists [10] and a shift of trade toward the West strained Iraqi relations with the Soviet Union; Iraq then took on a more Western orientation until the Persian Gulf War in 1991.
From Saddam's Wiki entry.
While Wikipedia does not out right say it, the Carter Administration warmed to Saddam in 1978.
