Whoever publishes first gets the credit. It works that way in science and technology. It appears it does in war as well. Sometimes.

Disease tore through the ranks of the Spanish-American War vets. If they weren’t dying after the war, they weren’t there

As a side note.

In the US camps as the forces staged for the departure to Cuba the Buffalo Soldier’s camps were noted to be among the cleanest and most military.

Are you the author of this paper ? My great grandfather was a war correspondent in this war, and I recently inherited a neat album of the photos he took. Among them is a photo of these buffalo soldiers. I am wondering if there is any research value to this collection.

He seems to have left out the officer that gave the orders to Kent.

Great story! I’m sure it’s not accurate history, but Black Jack Pershing (my distant relative on my father’s mother’s side) had a great line in the “Rough Riders” movie: “Buffalo Soldiers! This is what the Army pays you $16 a month for. Now are you going to let those *amateurs* beat you up that hill?!?”

Thanks for the ping. A favorite study topic is the Indian Wars in the West, and the service the 9th & 10th Cavalry, and Infantry units such as the 24th Infantry (a Black unit) under Ranald S. Mackenzie, performed in opening the West. Of course, Mackenzie went on to command the 4th Cavalry.

I’m going to pass this along to a buddy who’s also interested in the American West and the Civil War.

Wasn't Obama's Uncle Irazmus a Buffalo Soldier?

Seems to me he was.

[Al Gore invented the internet and he became a Nobel Peace Prize winner.]
