EU parliament Pres. says Olympics boycott should be considered

A boycott of this summer's Beijing Olympic Games should be considered if China does not re-evaluate its actions in Tibet, the president of the European Parliament said in an interview to be published in a German newspaper on Sunday.

"Beijing must decide. It must negotiate with the Dalai Lama immediately," Hans-Gert Poettering told the mass circulation Bild newspaper. Poettering added that boycott measures were justified, if there was no attempt at reconciling the differences.

"We should not exclude the possibility of a boycott of the Beijing Olympics. We want a successful Games, but not at the price of the cultural genocide of the Tibetans," he said.

Poettering, a member of the conservative Christian bloc in the parliament, said the European Parliament would discuss the situation in Tibet on Wednesday.

It is depressing when the EU shows more courage than American leaders.

I was just about to write that the Europeans seem to have grown bigger balls than our own leaders. Sarkozy is another example.

Shame on us for tolerating Red China’s outrageous behavior.

I don’t believe the Socialist / Communist EU bureaucrats give one damn about poor or oppressed people in this world. This is about them asserting political power.

There is no way the EU or any other major country will boycott the Beijing Games. Since the EU is talking about considering it, I’m sure it won’t be long before the Europeans start apologizing for upsetting Sino-Euro relations.

Look at the 1980 boycott of the Moscow games. In the end, it looked like the West was apologetic for politicizing the Olympic games.

More rules of engagement apparently. We are only allowed to hit the Chinese back AFTER they have stolen all of our patents, secrets and industry.

I’m glad ANYONE is speaking out against China’s actions in Tibet, for good motives or bad.

Boycotting the Oympics does nothing but deprive our atheletes from participating in an event they’ve worked their entire lives for. It’s apples and oranges to governments. There’s other ways the American government can deal with the situation.

FLASH!

On The Ground reports (through Japanese TV tonight).

Two of importance:

a) Troops pouring into Tibet from Communist China, are coming in from the furthermost areas with Red China, away from Tibet. i.e. reporters are noting vehicles coming in as far from as former Manchuria (Heiliungjang, etc). This confirms to the traditional Soviet and China crackdown of sending troops to rebelling areas with ethnics not connected in the remotest way to the area to be suppressed, to be more effective. It will be easy to order troops from Harbin to fire upon citizens in Lhasa in this way.

b) PLA troops are covering over their tanks that have the Chinese PLA marks ("81": 八一) for the 8th Route Army, with newspapers, to avoid coverage from foreign media or others (side and front of the tanks where these normally appear--a Japanese military specialist commented on the photos taken out of Tibet by Japanese tourists today). I saw these photos on Japanese TV just two hours ago.

(9:00 a.m. Eastern, Easter Sunday morning)
