Key Questions Still Left After Obama Speech
IBD ^ | March 20, 2008 | Charles Krauthammer

Posted on 03/20/2008 5:07:19 PM PDT by Kaslin

The beauty of a speech is that you don't just give the answers, you provide your own questions. "Did I ever hear him make remarks that could be considered controversial while I sat in church? Yes." So said Barack Obama, in his Philadelphia speech about his pastor, friend, mentor and spiritual adviser of 20 years, Jeremiah Wright.

An interesting, if belated, admission. But the more important question is: which "controversial" remarks?

Wright's assertion from the pulpit that the U.S. government invented the HIV virus "as a means of genocide against people of color"? Wright's claim that America was morally responsible for 9/11 — "chickens coming home to roost" — because of, among other crimes, Hiroshima and Nagasaki?

(Obama says he missed church that day. Had he never heard about it?)

What about the charge that the U.S. government (of Franklin Roosevelt, mind you) knew about Pearl Harbor, but lied about it? Or that the government gives drugs to black people, presumably to enslave and imprison them?

Obama condemns such statements as wrong and divisive, then frames the next question: "There will no doubt be those for whom my statements of condemnation are not enough. Why associate myself with Reverend Wright in the first place, they may ask? Why not join another church?"

But that is not the question. The question is, Why didn't he leave that church? Why didn't he leave — why doesn't he leave even today — a pastor who thundered not once but three times from the pulpit (on a DVD the church proudly sells) "God damn America"?

Obama's 5,000-word speech, fawned over as a great meditation on race, is little more than an elegantly crafted, brilliantly sophistic justification of that scandalous dereliction.

There's one big thing I see missing from conservative understanding of the Obama-Wright connection. When a conservative evangelical goes to church, he looks to align himself with what his preacher is saying, and if he cannot, then he moves to another church. A liberal or a moderate churchgoer is more likely a 'social' member, there because of family tradition, or their friends attend, or whatever reason besides basic hardcore belief.

Perhaps in the general election, the difference will hurt Obama. But within the DemonRat party, I'd venture to guess that the vast majority of churchgoers fit into the 'social' category. How else can you have heavily Catholic areas vote for politicians who support abortion? Because they nominally align with the religion, yet they sit in the pew and disagree with what the teachings are, without saying a word.

And they're perfectly fine with that. Conservatives should not generalize that their approach to religion applies to Obama voters, and think that Barry O's going to be damaged in the short term by this controversy.

The campaign must have Michelle Obama in hiding because they know she could pour so much gasoline on this fire that it would wreck Obama’s candidacy in one instant.

Here are Krauthammer’s comments on this matter from Brit’s show on FNC tonight:

I wasn’t offended by the reference to a “typical white person”, but there is a certain irony here. Here he is engaging in the racial stereotyping of his own white Grandma, two days after he dumped on her for engaging in what? Racial stereotyping.

It would be comical if it didn’t point out the incredible self-righteousness of Barack Obama. He appears unaware of what he did.

Look. Here’s a guy who had to give a speech because he’d been in this close relationship for 20 years with a raving racist. So what does he do? He gets up there and says “You know, this is a teaching moment, I’m going to instruct you on race relations in America.” And in his speech, did he apologize once? Did he once admit error? Did he even admit a lapse in judgment? No! He dumped on Ferraro, Grandma, Reverend Wright, black racists, white racial resentment, everybody is at fault except him, and he hovers above all of this in his celestial, uh, status up there and passes judgment and says “Come to me, I will heal our Nation.” It is an amazing performance.

I think Obama was also there, perhaps first and foremost, for ‘political’ reasons — to win validation from the activist racialist left in Chicago. Remember that 20 years ago he was simply a young unknown bi-racial intellectual fresh out of HAHvahd Law School, with no previous history or ties in Chicago. How better to prove his bona fides as a hard-core activist than to affiliate with one of the most left-wing activist ministers in the country?

The fact that Wright happens to be a demented racist with lunatic ideas about HIV/AIDS, American foreign policy etc. doesn’t mean he hasn’t been extremely useful to Obama’s career until now...... but that was before Obama had to win on a national stage.

I’m curious about something. Since Barack Obama is half white, is his white half typical half white?

Just a flash of her eyes at a question on this subject would have B.O. and her living off a senators salary for the next two years!

You are so right. They will have Michelle O under lock and key until this whole thing blows over...and then, they’ll tell her what she can say, and nothing more.

I’m surprised someone hasn’t taken video of some of her comments and paired them with Jeremiah’s.

Liberal commentators may have swooned, but to white moderates, Obama is now tainted goods.

Obambi isn’t used to close examination. Earlier he was compared to Tommy from pin ball wizard..this was apt.. He’s crumbling under the pressure.

I went to a black mega church a few years ago. They had the most wonderful music I have heard in a church in a long time: large choir and electric string instruments. I'll have to admit the volumne was a little to loud for me, but I enjoyed the music.

There was none of this hate and vitriol that we heard from the Rev. Wright.

I cannot believe that most black churches preach hate. What do you think?

Where do expect her to be, she is speaking to a room full of "typical black people" who can be trusted to keep what is said in the room to stay in the room.

Gosh... my bride of three decades characterized the B. H. Obama speech as "in your face ...so what"!

Okay, so the BHO has told us to stuff it! Well, I am not happy....

From the editorial:

It is not just the older congregants who stand and cheer and roar in wild approval of Wright's rants, but young people as well.

THAT is exactly the point I've been waiting for someone to make.

If Obama and the libs want to excuse Wright because of his past suffering, fine. But he DOES NOT have a right to poison a new generation with his hatred and racist views. THAT is his crime.
