I know folks here want to look at this as being motivated apolitically, but the decision to carry on with this case was surely approved by the AG, and was absolutely a political decision, and imho a very good one. Spitzer needed to be politically castrated, and only the feds could do it, and only under a gop administration. As others have noted, this is a redux of Capone and his taxes, because it is the only way spitzer can be stopped.
The man has the heart of a tyrant and a viper, who uses his power to destroy his enemies, reward his followers, and twist the law as flagrantly as he needs to. He would eventually have hoped to run for president, and just possibly would have won depending on what incompetent opposition he faced. He would be hillary x10, and a disaster for what little functional representative government we still have.
