Team Clinton: Down, and Out of Touch
Washington Post ^ | February 26, 2008 | Dana Milbank

They are in the last throes, if you will.

As Vice President Cheney knows, such predictions can be perilous. Still, there was no mistaking a certain flailing, a lashing-out, as two Clinton advisers sat down for a bacon-and-eggs session yesterday at the St. Regis Hotel.

The Christian Science Monitor had assembled the ¿minences grises of the Washington press corps -- among them David Broder of The Post, Maureen Dowd of the New York Times and columnist Mark Shields -- for what turned out to be a fascinating tour of an alternate universe.

First came Harold Ickes, who gave a presentation about Hillary Rodham Clinton's prospects that severed all ties with reality. "We're on the way to locking this nomination down," he said of a candidate who appears, if anything, headed in the other direction.

But before the breakfast crowd had a chance to digest that, they were served another, stranger course by Clinton campaign spokesman Phil Singer. Asked about an accusation on the Drudge Report that Clinton staffers had circulated a photo of Barack Obama wearing Somali tribal dress, Singer let 'er rip.

"I find it interesting that in a room of such esteemed journalists that Mr. Drudge has become your respected assignment editor," he lectured. "I find it to be a reflection of one of the problems that's gone on with the overall coverage of this campaign." He went on to chide the journalists for their "woefully inadequate" coverage of Obama, "a point that has been certainly backed up by the 'Saturday Night Live' skit that opened the show this past Saturday evening, which I would refer you all to."

I love it!

But until those legs roll up and out of sight, I’ll never believe it!

He discounts Drudge but then refers to a SNL spoof? What a buffoon. Why didn’t he just say no they weren’t the ones circulating it? Or if they were, why not fess up? It’s a legit photo, not photoshopped or anything.

I’m waiting for the inevitable ‘insider’ book detailing the last days of the Clinton campaign, it will read something like “The Bunker”, i.e., ‘...as the Obamas kept falling outside, der Hildabeast continued to meet with high ranking campaign officials in her fortified and reinforced underground command center, the somber officials seen leaving often in tears, shaking in terror, one reportedly said “she isn’t operating in reality anymore, she directs volunteer army groups to move from one state to another, orders up new campaign signs and slogans when the factories no longer produce them, she believes that her ‘wonder-weapons’ will be ready for the battlefield in time for a Texas and Ohio offensive, she doesn’t understand that we’re just trying to hold on for as long as we can in the face of overwhelming Barack-Attacks that keep overunning our positions! Ach MOO! She ist reduced to a stupid COW!”

LOL. And they claim Dubya has a "bunker mentality".

Then Singer mocks them for paying attention to Drudge then cites SNLas a source. You can;t make this stuff up.

Singer criticizes them for Drudge, then he uses SNL??????

That’s serious, but probably treatable; depends on how much he believes what he’s saying...

The reason these goofballs are desperately propping up this Hillary campaign is because the minute she throws in the towel, they’re out of a job, and no one will hire them them again. Ever.

ROFLMAO!! Singer and Ickes are just shoveling the manure as fast as they can, and Singer gets more and more angry when the MSM reporters no longer want to gulp it all down. Ickes sounds like he was not so much angry as delusional, until he allows a small crack for the sunlight of reality to appear at the end.

I doubt that Singer won any new influence by insulting all the MSM journalists who are such great friends of the Demagogues — if he and his candidate can’t be embraced by that audience then the collapse is well underway.

Is there a reason VP Cheney had to be thrown into the opening paragraph?

OK. I'm going to show my ignorance. I'm near illiterate. Here at FR, however, I know I can do so without shame.

What the F--- does "¿minences grises" mean?

"For the love of God, we can't say there's not much chance here," Ickes maintained.

Wow! Ickes sounds like he's begging for his life. The beatings will continue until morale improves...
